Back up all of your important data NOW. Your hard drive is about to snuff it.
Sorry to sound so harsh but it's a known problem with that IBM drive.

[edit] You can look at this page to see a few problems and symptoms others have had.

The later generation of IBM drive were renound for failure.

What has happed ids you experiencing bad sectors on your hard drive and the noise in the reading arm getting stuck with the bad sector.

Norton utilities can mark bad sectors so that the drive does not try to write to them but to be honest the price of hard drives now is so cheap (30Gig for £50) just go out and buy another and then transfer all the data from the IBM to it

Seriously SC1977 dont wait for it to go bang. Start saving for a new drive. I have learn't the hard way and I wouldn't want the same to happen to you. Remember your data is the most valuable part of yor PC.

    YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED :)
