Hard drive noise

My PC is around 12 months old - got two hard drives (500gb ea).
Just recently one of them has started making a whirring noise when the PC is on for any length of time.
Restarting the machine and it will turn off for a period of time, but then start again.

Is it a surefire sign of potential failure? Anything I can do?

Not necessarily, you should try running some drive diagnostic tools on it. They should be available from the drive's manufacturers website.

Sorry for looong delay, didn't auto notify me. How would one find out what manufacturer the hard drives are?
