Thinking about getting this on DVD to replace my old VHS version, an absolutely outrageous John Woo movie with more guns than you can shake a stick at.

However, there appear to be two versions I can buy - I'm not multiregional.

The first appears longer but only has a DD 2.0 soundtrack whilst the second is nearly half an hour shorter but has DD5.1.

Does anybody out there have any experience with these discs?

    Cheeky!!!:D

On reading the reviews on Amazon it looks as though both transfers are pretty flaky with loads of scratches and burnt on subtitles.

Sounds like they're all pretty bad DVDs  . Shame, as it's a crazy film and deserves better.

the criterion sounds like the one to go for, shame it will probably be priced in the hundreds on Ebay.

can't believe someone hasn't done a better release of this!

Yup i have the Criterion Edition....which is going for silly money as it is out of print...silly really as the print is non-anamorphic...but still not that bad..plus it has some cool extras. But Hopefully someone like Hong Kong Legends will bring out a better version soon..like they did with "The Killer". Apparently they now have the rights to "Bullet In The Head" which would also be great!!

At £35, Criterion Hard Boiled is easily the most expensive single dvd I own. The picture on this version is OK, but nothing special.

Sadly, HKL do not have the rights to this one.
"Bullet In The Head" is to be released by them later this year though.

It's kind of sad that the poor Criterion dvd print is regarded by many as the best print available.

If you want to see Hard Boiled the way it was ment to be seen upon it's initial release, get the excellent French dvd.

The print is just amazing (apparently created from a new high def master).
The French set has lots of extras (in English) but due to distribution rights does not have English subs for the film itself.

It's released by HK Video and available from Amazon fr.

The UK rights are owned by Tartan so Hong Kong Legends will never be able to release it.

Tartan's rights on Hard Boiled won't last forever. So when their license runs out HKL will have a chance to get it.
