Halo on Photoshop layer

On the attached picture, the green is the background and the boys are a layer on top which I have used the layer mask to bring them back to the front.
The problem is there is a halo around the boys. When using the brush in layer mask it always seems to show up.
I would like to used the clone stamp tool to match colours of the grss etc from the background. Is there anyway to do this ?

zoom into the boys' outlines at 200% and use a brush set to the opposite layer mask colour of the boys (if they are black then set brush to white) and work on that so that the b/g image goes right up to the boys outlines.

I guess you had the selection tool you used to 'cut' the boys set to feather of like 15px or something?
