Is Halo as good as the media says ? This would be my reason to buy an xbox as there aren't that many games at the moment that I'd want to play

Halo ? No, it's not good.
IT'S ABSOLUTELY BLOODY AMAZING !
I say that as someone who has played games for many a year (and is often difficult to please). 6 months on this game still astounds. If you are going to buy an XBOX then you must also buy this game.:D

Has anyone played it on-line yet ?
I have ntl broadband via an ethernet cable modem and am wondering if I can plug the xbox into that to play on-line ?
It sounds as though there is enough gameplay in it without having to go on-line though !!

You need to network your XBox to your PC and then download a piece of software called XBConnect (there's Gamespy as well, but it's not as well regarded). It works quite well.

No idea mate as I'm not too clued up on PC matters. I got a second network card which connects to my PC via USB, as well as about 20 metres of cable.

It should work ok through a router. I have an adsl switch which worked fine. Do you have a US xbox as most of the people online use NTSC boxes and you can't mix them.

As to the experience - a little dull really and it is quite slow. This is because the multiplayer elements of Halo were designed to run on a lan (xboxs connected directly to each other) and so a 512 dsl/cable line doesn't really hack it.

have fun.

I used to play this via gamespy (via router) on 512 cable line. Was fun but as said above the game isn't designed for online play. I was never able to play against more than one person at a time due to bandwidth requirements.
The game does belong in any Xbox owners collection though, plenty of replay value..and the co-op mode..awesome..;)

I assume that it is not possible to have dedicated servers for Halo? I hope that MS have prepared for online play with having games, which run on dedicated servers. There is no way you can run a client/server adequately, unless you are playing a low bandwidth game like a strategy title.

I am looking forward to Counterstrike on the X-Box, hopefully they will be able to play against PC players, then I can get some N00b slaying on the go again. Shudder to think of all those players with control pads.... heeheee

I'm pretty sure XBox Live is a closed network so it's unlikely PC players will be able to take part.

As for pads vs mouse/keyboard - the XBox pad (especially in its Japanese form) suits Halo perfectly. In any case, the pacing of the game is slower than other games of the genre so I can't see the mouse/keyboard being an advantage.

I have been playing games since back when the Commodore 64 was great! So I have been playing games for 18 years +

Personally I found HALO to be very overated and monotonous.

I found the graffics to be bland and quite jerky at times, considering the hype surrounding the Xbox graffical abilities I was surprised, and not impressed at all. Nothing here that made my jaw drop.

The gameplay for me quickly got boring, same old thing over and over again.

Admittedly I am not a fan of FPS games, but considering all the crap that went around about this game, I thought I would give it a go. Well this game has not changed my mind, I still find these FPS games dull.

Still if these games are your bag, then you will possibly like it.

I will not be buying HALO2.

I have been playing games for 16+ years and own all of the major console releases of the last 10 years, and HALO is FANTASTIC!!!

During the summer/autumn game drought I played it again and again, just try the harder levels, they are impossible!!! Hook it up to a digital amp for full on surround.

ALSO check around some places (www.gibsoft.com) they do pre chipped machines with 1 year warranty, and then you can get your games from the car boot!!

Halo... brilliant, brilliant game. Spend half my life (it seems) on it.

Play it thru xbconnect.com, works great, brilliant fun games. Also play LAN games with 3 xboxes, and 10+ mates... that is pure class.

If anyone starts playing on xbconnect.com PM me and we'll have a fight :D

sounds cool.

I'm on the site now, trying to find out if I can run this stuff with my Mac and Broadband ADSL?

I'm in Leeds as well, with an X-box and Halo, waiting to do this this.........

I thought halo wasn´t good at all. Looks and sounds fine.. but limited weapons and VERY monotonous action... some stages were so alike to the previous ones that I though I was playing the same part twice over.

classic overhype , its not bad , but not as great as people make out.
UT2003 blows it away as does Half Life .

If u have a reasonable PC wait its coming out on PC
