especially during video footage between levels, I get really bad stutters, textures arriving late, even whole layers of image being rendered 1 second after the scene starts.
Is this happening on your version? Mine's quite an old xbox. Have they put more meaty hardware in more recent ones?

No, if anything it is more likely to be your xbox dvd drive diening on you, there are three types of them, samsung, phillips and thomson, the latter being the best. The latter is known to die around 1 year of use - although this does of course vary, however you can buy new dvd drives for around £40 off ebay or xbox-scene.com forums.

    This happens on ALL Xbox's.

If you go to Bungie.com they have a Q&A page and this is one of the topics.

They say its to do with the fact that they have no load times, so the Xbox is doing everything on the fly and sometimes struggles to keep up.

It was this or put up with long load times.

Don't panic, nothing's dying. Your xbox is fine. According to Bungie - Halo 2 streams everything from the DVD and hard drive so that's why we're all getting popups.

I was wondering about this also, at least I know there is nothing wrong with my xbox.

Kaz, i bought my xbox 5 days after release two and a half years ago. I've just finished Halo 2 (sunday) and i had none of the oproblems you mentioned.

As for newer xboxes being "more upto date" while some minor changes may take place - the basic spec will always be the same thats why its a console and not a PC :D

Yeah, I've noticed the "fill in" effect on many of the cutscenes. It's not a big problem, but if you're looking for it, it can be distracting.

Agreed, it is distracting once you've noticed it, and it does look a bit crappy IMO. Is this partly due to a lack of specialist texture programming expertise at Bungie, or just down to a slow bus/ram in the xbox itself?

I don't recall any of my other xbox games suffering from it as badly as Halo 2 does. I mean, its flippin' atrocious :(

I have also noticed the rendering issue with H2.

What bothered me though is when you first start playing the game, when you are being escorted around by one of your comrades. If he turns around to face you, he seems to physically "stutter" whilst turning around. He gets there eventually, it just looks like he's had to many espresso's!

Another thing is, one on of the levels, some of the sounds (specifically the weapons) became really muffled. This lasted till the end of the scene. It was almost like shell shock!

Has anyone else seen (heard) this? Is it meant to be like this?

    Vacuum

I've not had any popup problems. My Xbox is brand spanking new ( got rid of my chipped 120G HD version just to ensure Halo2 played fine).

Unfortunately I get stutters if I feed 60Hz xbox rendering to my HS20 via Dscaler so I stick on 50Hz and all is well.

However I wonder if I am at a disadvantage on Live games. (did ok the other night though).

Should we be setting our XBOX's to 50hz then ? A la Halo 1, so to speak ?

Not necessarily : its more symptomatic of the 56Hz refresh rate on my HS20 . Halo2 runs fine in 60Hz on my plasma which is 60Hz native (without any remapping) The 56Hz refresh on the HS20 seems to make 30fps material (which is what I suspect the Xbox is rendering ) drop frames so it stutters badly even ingame.

I've been playing mostly in 50Hz though as a result. I'm wondering if you get an advantage in Live games at 60Hz relative to 50Hz though.

Also get the graphics pop in - it is due to the game streaming off the HD / DVD drive thats why theres no loading. Play Riddick it uses a similar graphic tech as halo 2 but has no graphic pop in BUT suffers from some long load times.

the bit with the muffled sound i think is deliberate because you go through an airlock and outside the spaceship into space - i thought it was a great effect

Although, strictly speaking you shouldn't be able to hear anything at all! :lesson:

You can tell that one of my favourite shows is Firefly :D

Surely you could hear yourself breathing in the armoured suit? Or farting, if you're being shot at.
