Great review :smashin: and a fantastic film.
I'm even more impressed that it was reviewed on a fantastic and very underrated Panasonic DX902 which is a great TV.

Any examples of the differences in the colour timing? I'll probably grab the iTunes version when it's upgraded.

Not sure why this is getting such good reviews. Detail is better than ever but the colour looks like its been drained by Dracula from the print! Main titles Pumpkin confirms that its very pale & never really changes for the entire film. I have a feeling Lionsgate knew the scan was not going to please everyone hence the lower than usual price point.

This is one of those releases where the BD actually looks overall more pleasing to the eye than the pale looking 4K. John Carpenter & Dean Cundy both approved it according to Lionsgate US so it is what it is.

. It was filmed in the autumn so it does have that dull feel it also was a low budget film. Their was a thx release that was the closest reproduction of the theatrical but all versions like you said where approved by John Carpenter and Dean Cudney even though all versions looked diffrent.

Will have to watch the 4k and try to remember if its accurate to other versions color wise

The THX edition was not the closest reproduction of the theatrical and more like a revisionist copy.

Colour is definitely messed up on the 4K UHD. Around the 33:43 min mark when Laurie & Annie are driving you get a few glimpse of bright orange lens flare inside the car. The BD (as per the screenshot attached) looks as it should. The 4K looks very muted & restrained. Also check out the interior of the Red car it looks ok on the BD. 4K looks very washed out. Looks like the 4K scan is either faulty or they CBA to check it all properly. A lot of the time when they say its approved by Director or DP they really mean they looked at a few scenes then gave the ok. Very few of these people have the patience to sit in the telecine booth (or whatever its called nowadays) for hours looking at everything subjectively. Most of the time they are shown what has been completed then asked to ok. That is what it seems has happened here or Dean Cundy has selective memory from the last time he did this!

Interesting i am actually going to watch this on Wednesday with few friends over and will see how it looks on the LGC8 my uncle has the Panny FZ802 that will give me a better idea as the panny is extremely accurate i will have a quick look later to compare the BD and 4K disks. that scene in the car makes me think its due to the high contrast of HDR what tv is that ?

LG SJ800 its taken from the BD directly via the desktop though. Colour is drained away from the 4K UHD its also obvious in many other areas. There is a daylight scene where the 3 girls are walking along the street talking & a closeup of Annie's lower face (Nancy Loomis as she was called then) you can see some form of variable DNR in operation as one frame her face is smooth & waxy then a few moments later the DNR lifts & you can see around her lower chin region she has bad acne the makeup cannot hide! The variable DNR is also present on the greenery in the background at time around the street scenes.

Either its a faulty 4K UHD scan released as is or a lot of HDTV firmware needs upgrading to display it properly!

Sorry, that’s not correct - it was filmed in the spring of 1978

The UHD or the BD? As I said the BD is the same as the 35 anniversary disc. Only the UHD is a new scan.

Had a quck comparison last night of the 2013 anniversary Ray vs the 4k last night . The beginning when We flrst see JL curtis walking in the lush green lawns and green trees of her neighbourhood the Bluray colors look oversaturated its evident in the skin tones aswell . The 4k is much more natural looking with darker color pallette. I don't know what everyone is complaining about its the best ive seen it will be watching it all tomorrow and Will report back

I thought it looked good, shame it is not Dolby Vision because the discs with DV usually look better on my TV. Anyway, who knows what this looked like in 1978 as most cinemas were poor in both sound and vision (hence George Lucas tried to change this back in the day with THX.) The VHS was super poor, the DVD was okay-ish, the blu-ray was better and the UHD version is the best so far.

I think this is one of the first UHD discs (I own) where all of the extras are on the UHD disc (essentially making the blu-ray copy redundant) The extras aren't in 4k but that is not an issue.

Just finished watching this i was very impressed by both Video and sound first thing i have to mention is the soundtrack its the best i have heard it the main theme has so much more fuller sound and heavier bass note.

Daylight scenes looked by far the best this has looked so much more brighter the greenery looked so natural and lots of details the colors are spot on. I have to mention one scene just after Laurie and Annie in the car after speaking to Annie dad the Sherif, driving in the sunset the quality suddenly looked like a dvd no idea what happened there i think the cameras used struggled with the lower light of the sunset that's my only negative. One thing i wanted to see was the night scenes and it did not disappoint, all the night scenes where well lit up and had no trouble making out the details of the scenes. i diffidently saw more details than the blu ray. The scene when Mick Myers lay on the floor behind the sofa after the needle in the neck you can make out his whole frame was not like that in the blu ray. The indoor scenes looked really impressive.

This film never gets old the atmosphere is what makes this film so great

All these versions and they STILL can't give us the original mono soundtrack, just some silly mono-mixdown.
