WOW
Dont launch steam a lot these days since i stopped clanning in CS:S, loaded it up the other day after a long Mod & Post session here...heh. Realised they had released more media on the upcoming episode. Namely a second trailer (far as i can tell the first trailer is the one at the end of Episode 1 which hooked me immediately!) and 5 gameplay examples...which unlike most game footage are not a low res blurry load of rubbish!..lol.
What can i say, ok, graphically HL2 is falling behind the latest stuff, but its still more than good enough to impress at times. But the gameplay and storyline is just exploding! It looks fantastic, I cant begin to imagine everything that you will get to do, I just hope that EP2 is 150% as long as EP1 which I enjoyed very much but found a little short. Namely good VFM due to its pace, a very well done job indeed there. They kept you moving a lot, with the occasional few moments to stop and take your time.
Some of the things it looks like will happen in EP2 though are making me dribble...lol. Normally i would much prefer an environment like HL1 to HL2:EP2, HL2 itself was a bit of a mix of both in a way, claustrophobic indoor and expansive outdoor. EP2 however seems to be going for cluttered outdoor, ie forested land. Open enough for danger to lurk anywhere, but enough cover to creep around. Should be interesting, I do hope they have an indoory section as well though, nothing more fun than lobbing grenades in to rooms then charging in like a nutjob with the LMB constantly depressed...lol
I'm guessing there is still going to be an EP3. Personally I'd rather see EP2 be the last of HL2, then wait 3 years for a HL3 to come out. Upgraded Source engine, but same basic control interface. With Valve making it a massive epic game to finish things off.
After Legend Of Zelda, Half Life is probably the longest game I have ever played (outside of obvious really long games like Civ2 on the largest map setting..lol) that kept me interested throughout the entire game. Opposing forces was a welcome add on that used a (i'm guessing) unique perspective of the same story told from another angle, it was obviously shorter, but much fun and highly replayable. Then BlueShift, possibly a money spinner to get funds for HL2? Still very enjoyable, a third perspective on the Black Mesa goings on, it was also short, but still employed some interesting ideas and only suffered as usual with a slightly weak ending that seems the preserve of first person shooter games. Half Life 2 was astounding in its interface, I'm sure most who read this will remember playing with tin cans and the guard soon as you got off the train, throw stuff at him, run away with him chasing for a bit, wait till he returns to his post, throw something else at him, etc....hehe. It's storyline was not quite as long as Half Life, but obviously more varied, namely because it had more work to do combining a mix of subtle and not so subtle plot devices. However i feel they worked very well for the most part, but I did find a few weak areas of the game that i feel were possibly added just to make it longer.
Half Life for me was a 9.9/10 game, Half Life 2 was more a 8.5/10 game, namely because it was treading a path beaten flat by Half Life, however 8.5 is not bad, most games I have played in my life I would not rate above 6/10. Episode 1 suffered for me due to its shortness, but was otherwise a very useful vehicle in getting Gordon to the more meaty looking Episode 2. I'd probably put it around 7.8/10 when comparing to the full blown brethern, or 8.4 compared to its add on counterparts from the first game (OpFor 8.7, BlueShift 6.9....these scores based on the fact they are add ons, not a score to compare to the main games). Judging by the movies i've seen on Steam, EP2 could be heading for a 9.5 as an add on, or possibly as high as 8.5 against its full size parent.....time will tell
So who else here is looking forward to EP2? If you havnt seen the vids available on Steam, launch it and watch them please! and tell me you are thinking 'What Wii?'
Valve, possibly the only game designer outside Nintendo that looks to give people the real gameplay experience
