Good review Cas. The only thing I don't agree with is your comment about the slo-mo scenes. IMHO they have absolutely no place in a movie like this, and this is where Mel Gibson crosses that fine line between brutal honesty and voyeurism.

      I loved this film.

AV wise, it has to be one of the most dynamic sound mixes I have ever heard.

Really looking forward to hearing the Atmos mix at home.

A great film all round, the first 35 mins is a little slow but it introduces us to and develops the cast and story. Once the action kicks in its brutal and unrelenting! Very nice picture and the Atmos is awesome. LFE channel gets a serious serious work out! For those of you with powerful subwoofers, start nailing stuff down :D

I enjoyed the film - but its really over rated.
Its good until the action then it feels all disjointed and hard to follow - like there is bits cut out to make it shorter. I doesnt flow that well and feels cut together. Or maybe it was the opposite and felt padded in places

I also wasnt that impressed with the sound - the vocal didnt flow with the film very well and sounded added in half the time, in particular sam worthingtons lines - again where they are maybe trying to explain the story as they have cut bits out or something

Maybe it was just the oppo 203 issues but it wasnt what I was expecting in those fronts. Bombastic doenst mean its reference quality Heard much better than this

As a veteran myself, i felt very uncomfortable watching this at the cinema in 5.1 - at one point i went to leave but my wife stopped me and I'm glad she did as it's a great film about heroism in times of absolute carnage.
And it was the sound and not the visuals that made me feel uneasy - as good as the visuals are there's a difference in this case to "seeing" and "doing".
I've got this on UHD disc and am going to brave it tonight. No Atmos but plenty of beer to steady the nerves!

You say the bd is demo quality? Over on bluray.com everyone said it's the worst lionsgate disc ever with tons of typical lionsgate BR banding. Yet you say it's demo. Weird. I won't be watching it either way but the uhd is divine. One of
The best mixes I've heard too.

I found this movie really moving , filling up a bit with real footage of Desmond at the end . Very moving and a story I had never heard of before .

A great UHD movie as well , expertly shot and filmed with Graphic scenes in all the right places , I think Gibson caught the ferocious Hiri kiri Japanese army that hadn't been shown for how brutal and merciless they were in WW2. That surrendering science with grenades is harrowing I had to watch again to fully take in .

To think this is A true story is unbelievable in every sense , it's like watching a marvel movie hero and the surreal world they are in , Doss is doing the same in a real historic true life moment .

Vince Vaughn of all people .....doing a dramatic role. He isn't just a wedding crasher comedy one trick pony.

A must watch and own but repeated viewings I think could be for the sick it's that intense

I think this is the pinnacle of what's now achievable in the home cinema, I think it's the finest UHD disc released so far.
As an audio/ visual experience its second to none, absolutely cutting edge! It's shot beautifully, some of the framing is stunning & the sound mix is mind blowing!
As a movie, it may not be for everyone but there's a reason it was nominated for so many awards, Fantastic film making, fantastic story telling & bloody visceral!
Mel Gibson is really one of my favourite film makers and this just cements it for me (plus his beautifully lustrous beard that I saw him adorning while watching the special features)
I'm so glad that I know of this man 'Doss' now, incredible.

Was a good film but not quite as good as i was hoping.

Some really cheesey and clichéd bits.

For whatever reason a worrying fault developed during playback. Some kind of blue ghosting around peoples limbs began as a mild annoyance and got worse as the film went on. By the end of the film the image resembled a Lenticular cover.

In all my years i have never seen anything like it. Hopefully the fault lies with the disc (doubtful) or the player (an increasingly dissapointing xbox one s).

Have you guys tried wiping the discs, some of them have a different coating and the One S doesnt like it, like Mockingjay Pt1 and Planet Earth.

I watched this on my Oppo 203 in the weekend. Wow, what a fantastic hard hitting and moving movie. Great audio sound track, visuals not the best I've seen on the format but never mind that as I got totally drawn in to this.

Agree with the cheesy bits....the dialogue is very clunky....but the sound...just wow...had no problems playing it on my Xbox but again I agree it's getting disappointing the more I need it.

I've given up on the Xbox one s as a movie player; noisy, slow to start, too many discs it just didn't load, always an update due, frustrating user interface, I ended up just getting the Oppo 203 and get it over and done with.
