    Hello

I have had a Themescene H56 for a couple of months now and am still very impressed with the picture quality.
I am currently viewing DVDs from a Pioneer 575 via component leads.

I have been reading about DVI connections/scalers/processors/HCPCs etc and am a bit confused, but trying to learn  .

Can anyone suggest the next logical upgrade path for me to follow to maximise the potential of this projector?

    Thanks :)

HTPC or HDMI (Pioneer 668 or 868) for best image quality could be one route, and perhaps a Hoya FL-Day filter and recalibration for the image - if it can benefit from the filter that is..

    Thanks

So a Pioneer 868 connected directly to the projector should improve things?

Would the next step be buying a separate scaler and SDI DVD player?

Possibly - but the 868 is digital all the way into the pj (no digital to analogue and then A-D conversions), and it has it's own scaling, so I would think it would be difficult to improve upon that. If you don't get any comments regarding external scalers, do another post to see if someone has gone that route with good results. Gordon Fraser has a lot of experience with scalers, so he might be able to point you in the right direction there.

If you can get a demo, that should help you decide if the 868s improvement is visible enough for it to warrant the purchase. You may prefer a component image - I did at one time prefer it over HTPC on my HT1000 due to it's 'creamy' looking image, but a change of software player made me stay with HTPC.

With expensive perchases, you should try to demo beforehand, or find someone who would sell it to you with a returns policy so that you can take it back if it's not what you're after.

    Gary.

    NO no dont do it.

The pioneer will not display a pic on the H56 as its dvi input is not HDCP compatable so HDMI will not lock to the PJ.

    PHEW just saved ya £800

either use a PC (htpc) to the dvi input, which will give the best pic.(or as good as SDI)

    Or

Get a dvi player that does not need HDCP (bravo, etc)

or and the best option is to go SDI. route an SDI pic from dvd player to a scaler and then to the dvi input of the H56.
but this will cost a bit.(but avoids any HDCP issues)

Or get the best possible component out dvd player.(

    Thanks for that Gandley.

That's why I always suggest a demo or a good returns policy, especialy at this price point.

No problem gary. with all the DVI talk around one does always think DVI will be HDCP.

Very true. I think the H77 is compliant, so that could allow the assumption that all of the range is - I'm sure I saw the Pioneer feeding it via hdmi-dvi recently.
