    Hi Guys, longer time lurker and all that.....i have a problem that thread title sums up fairly well. When i place the tone arm of my Gyrodeck down to play it skips across the surface of the vinyl! i've tried with my limited knowlede of adusting the tonearm (Rega RB-300) to no effect. Has anyone else had this problem and know of any fixes? Cheers.

    Sounds like the anti-skate and possible the counterweight are out of sync.
    Couple of follow up questions;

    What cartridge is on the arm?
    Will it hold a groove at all, or does it make straight for the centre?
    Have you changed anything recently?

    Check the stylus is still in place.

    With a high-power magnifier, check the stylus still has a tip on it, or -

    Without switching on the turntable, place the tonearm on a record and move the record by hand. With the exception of the speed being incorrect, does it sound 'normal'? If it does, that suggests stylus and tip are still OK.

    Tell us what you did to adjust the tracking weight and anti-skate.

    In short, you should get the arm balanced so that it's level, by moving the weight on the rear of the arm. Then, without moving the weight, move the weight indicator on the front of the tracking weight to zero, then move the weight and indicator together till the indicator shows the desired weight. Then set the antiskate to correspond.

    In extremis, if the cartridge looks fine and it still does this after the arm is balanced, it is possible that the spring mechanism in the anti skate has failed.

    The tone arm is a Rega 300. When i get home this evening i'll take a proper look at the set up (and stylus), prior to dropping it into Music Matters. I'll let you know how i get on. Cheers.

    Well it's taken a while to sit down and take a proper look....fairly straight forward problem in the end, the stylus had come off!
    Just need a replacement now. Any suggestions?

    As little as possible to be honest. Would £250 get me anything worth while? Prefer to spend less if possible......
