I have the opportunity to purchase one of the following:

    42" Fujitsu PDS 4221E-H (http://www.ciao.co.uk/Fujitsu_PDS4221__5597364/TabId/4)

    50" Pioneer 502 MXE (http://www.ciao.co.uk/Pioneer_PDP_502MXE__5597512/TabId/4)

    42" Sony PFM 42B1E (http://www.ciao.co.uk/Sony_PFM_42B1E__5317873/TabId/4)

I don't know much about plasma screens. These will be second hand having seen light use. Could someone tell me which is the newest model and which they would recommend, ignoring price. I am interested in picture quality when playing DVDs or watching TV.

Sorry I don't have more info.

    Many thanks in advance
    D

I think they are all a couple of generations old now and things move fast in this field.

I personnally would not really want to own any of them unless the price was right.

What sort of prices have you been offered ?

With the 42" panny series 6 now availble for about £1500 brand new they would have to go some to beat it.

    Cheers, Lee

Cheers loonatic, to be honest they are auctioning these off at work. I just want to know how much i should set my maximum price for each model.

Are there any which you would rule out straight away?

I've not had any first hand experience of any of the three screens.

I would probably put the Pioneer at the top of the list, though as I say they've since released the 503MXE and the current model 50MXE-1 since so that makes it about 3yrs old now...which is a long time for these things.

The new 50MXE-1 can be had for around £3350 and someone is selling a 503MXE here in the classifieds for £1995. I have just bought a 50MXE-1 which should arrive shortly.

So if it's in good condition, low hours and no screen burn, I'd say it could be worth up to £1500. You could then team it up with a decent external scaler or HTPC and have a pretty decent set up for not too much money.

Both the Sony and the Fujitsu are ALiS panels of which I am not a fan...have a search on the forum for more details. I don't think I'd want to pay any more than £750 for either of these.

Can you get to see any of them working before bidding ? preferably playing a DVD and not a PowerPoint presentation or something ?

    Cheers, Lee

Obviously everyone is going to vote for their own screen, which is why I'm suggesting that you look at the Hitachi 42PD5000 series

Check for screen burn. It is VERY common for 'works' machines to be left displaying the same image all day. Call centre plasmas are especially prone to this as they are used to display call stats.

Good point alan, so get your PC plugged in and do a .ppt of solid colours, inc black and white, look for any faint marks in the picture, this is screenburn. My best out of those is the Pioneer, I've installed one recently for a client who took it out of a showhome (he's a property developer, not a burglar!)

Not easily done actually. Besides, they have a good chance of being bugged themselves, wait till something goes wrong.
