    Hi,

I'm considering getting a DVD/HDD recorder with Guide Plus. However, I've read that the EPG comes in either through Eurosport (not on freesat) or analog ITV. I don't have a sky subscription, and I don't get analog reception. Does this mean that I won't be able to use Guide Plus, and there's no point in even thinking about a compatible recorder?

    thanks,
    Rachel

Well yes, I suppose the answer must be yes. If you get a DVD recorder with just a Freeview tuner then the problem would still exist.

Incidentally, why can't you an analogue signal into an analogue tuner-based DVD recorder assuming you bought the latter? Could you not have an indoor aerial or some such device?

Wow, freeview. If I could receive that, I'd just get a pvr with a freeview tuner. I live in a really bad area for tv, though. I've had an aerial specialist in my loft telling me that freeview is an impossibility. I'd need to live a bit higher up the hill to even get terrestrial analog (even though the freeview website says I should be able to get it). Everyone I know who lives nearby either has sky, freesat, or no tv at all.

I posted this query on usenet, and someone said that as long as I could get teletext for Eurosport (and I can), then guide plus will work...that is, I don't actually need to get Eurosport as long as teletext for it comes in ok.

    which service do you get?

if you can get eurosport t/text you'll be ok

if you use cable - a cable splitter straight into the recorder would work better (it would get ITV t/text)

I get freesat from sky. It's the only option out in the boondocks where I live. :)

I get teletext from Eurosport... so it should be ok then?

On my Pioneer DVR-530H I can set it to any analogue channel without any type of box plugged into it, put the Pioneer into STANDBY MODE in within a few hours the EPG will be loaded onto it. I don't know why people keep saying you have to have Eurosport or ITV on.

I don't get any analog channels, so it will only work with satellite ones. Thanks for the info, though.

I'm seriously considering the new Philips 7300 ... judging by the manual, even if I can't get guide plus working, I'd be able to trigger recordings from my sky box.

If you check the manual you will see that all you require is ITV tuned in, Guide+ will find ITV whatever channel you have selected.

Will it find ITV on satellite? I can't tune anything in over analogue.

You can check here but all the info that I have ever seen says for GB that you must download on ITV via an arial, or Eurosport via Sat.

ITV via SAT is never mentioned as an option, so I would very much doubt it.

    You'll be Ok

check out your digibox - if it has r/f out (coax cable) - you may be able to get ITV thru it without occupying your digi tuner channel

I think I should stop asking questions and just jump in. Will probably order the new Philips one on payday. :)
