Having played GTA3 on the PS2 i am amazed how great Vice City is on the Xbox, i am sure it was good on the PS2 but never having played it on the PS2 i cannot compare.

It is just so stylish and well done with a great sound track, also the Dolby Digital sound is excellent. When the cops are chasing you, you can actually here the carnage behind you as they are banging into cars to get to you. Also the drive by's on the motorbikes with the machine gun are great. Definitely recommended :smashin:

It is only 4.0 DTS and from what I have read the Xbox versions DD 5.1 is better, not by a lot though.

    The Unknown
    As we know,
    There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
    We also know
    There are known unknowns.
    That is to say
We know there are some things
    We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
    The ones we don't know
    We don't know.

    Glass Box
You know, it's the old glass box at the—
    At the gas station,
Where you're using those little things
Trying to pick up the prize,
    And you can't find it.
    It's—

And it's all these arms are going down in there,
And so you keep dropping it
And picking it up again and moving it,
    But—

Some of you are probably too young to remember those—
    Those glass boxes,
    But—

But they used to have them
    At all the gas stations
    When I was a kid.

    A Confession
    Once in a while,
    I'm standing here, doing something.
    And I think,
"What in the world am I doing here?"
    It's a big surprise.

    Happenings
You're going to be told lots of things.
You get told things every day that don't happen.

It doesn't seem to bother people, they don't—
    It's printed in the press.
The world thinks all these things happen.
    They never happened.

Everyone's so eager to get the story
Before in fact the story's there
That the world is constantly being fed
    Things that haven't happened.

All I can tell you is,
    It hasn't happened.
    It's going to happen.

Of what is going on in this world,
Just by punching on his mouse
    For a relatively modest cost!

    The Situation
Things will not be necessarily continuous.
The fact that they are something other than perfectly continuous
Ought not to be characterized as a pause.
There will be some things that people will see.
There will be some things that people won't see.
    And life goes on.

    Clarity
    I think what you'll find,
I think what you'll find is,
Whatever it is we do substantively,
    There will be near-perfect clarity
    As to what it is.

    And it will be known,
And it will be known to the Congress,
And it will be known to you,
    Probably before we decide it,
    But it will be known.

The point that i was making is that i have only played GTA3 on the PS2 and not Vice City. I have only played Vice City on the xbox but not on the PS2. Apologies for the confusion.
Vice City is imo a better game than GTA3, its just so stylish and has a pretty neat soundtrack. I am sure that this is the case on either console.
As for DTS on PS2 who cares please read the dvd snob thread in the dvd section ;)

Haven't checked this thread in a while.

Vice City on PS2 DOES have in-game DTS 5.1. Dialogue does not come out of the centre-channel, but effects are still steered to it.

It sounds fantastic in DTS-ES Matrix (it's not flagged, but it still sounds good).

    Yes.

He never said the XBox version was any better or worse - just that it was amazing on the Xbox. :lesson:

Dimmy (or anyone else) can you prove this point? i thought the PS2 could only process 5.1 for cutscenes? Its not a dig or anything, i was just wondering.

    cheers

Vice City on PS2 does have in game DTS 4.0 which I was a bit jealous of when I heard about it. Got a mate of mine to bring his PS2 around and we hooked it up mo my 5.1 system. Gotta be honest, I was very disappointed with it and its not really a patch on the Xbox 5.1 DD soundtrack. It lacked bass and any kind of punch. Just my opinion.

GaryD - beyond my amp saying "DTS" when I'm playing Vice City, I can't prove this point, no.

I haven't heard the Dolby D soundtrack on the X-Box though, would like to...

yeah, the DTS on the PS2 VC isnt as accomplished as say SSX 3 or SSX trickys DTS. its a little lacking in places. i think the 5.1 from the xb sounded better overall.

looking back.... the XB GTA is quite good. i wasnt sure on it at first. well i still think it belongs on PS2 with the pad and sony style but still. the xb does a fine job of porting it. well worth a look.

the PS2 can do 5.1 in game. it just takes up too much processing power so no game uses it except for a few in the cut scenes. DTS is handled by an external source however and is therefore no draw on system power.
