As promised.. Current condition - Awaiting skirting, carpet and then units.

TV is just waiting for the PC cable to arrive and that can go on once its fed down behind the wall.

Groove, i wanted to say a big thank you for creativity and sharing that online for all. I pretty much copied what you did if you don't mind, however, i didn't use mdf and instead used drywall/plaster board. The paint that i used is the same as the wall was before as you'll see from the images below. Many thanks!! :)

i wish i had seen your project before i started my build. looks great. i unfortunately never made pics during the build, but it was done within a week.

i used mdf with a special coating for paint i dont know the english word for it. then i finished it of with terpetine based exterior paint. i also used a rope light and some ambx sets.

    Hi Groove

I have just looked through your thread and I must say you have done a fantastic job!!

I am looking at wall mounting my TV and channeling all cables and was hoping someone could advise me of what I should channel to the TV. Can you please let me know what cables you have from channeled from your BESTA unit to your TV? My thread is here. Any input would be greatly appreciated :smashin:

i used sigma s2u satin (semi gloss) and applied it with a roller (2 coats) its RAL 7024 grafite grey.

here is the site buts its all in dutch. didnt find a english version. u can use google translate. the pdf has more info. to get a good finish u must use a good vilt roller and a separate roller to do the after rolling

as many have said before, congrats on what you created. While i dont have the space you and many others have, my mind and goals are certainly big. Been studying all the posts, advice and measurements for couple weeks now and certainly used nearly a tree's worth of paper. Can't wait to start work at weekend, sadly im not good at taking my time so this will be painful for me. Again groove, congrats dude.

Looks really good mate but a tad to many ornaments for my liking. Id also recommend you at least remove the one directly in front of yor centre speaker.

I think it looks awesome, where did you get your piece of wood for the back panel and what type is it? I am looking for a large back panel or large piece and can't find it anywhere? Anyone have ideas on what/where to buy?

    Thanks!

This is the thread I am going to use to copy the design of Groove's floating wall. I think it looks superb.

In general - how much are we talking for such a wall? Any ballpark figure (might already be on the thread - reading through it just now...)

Hi guys, looking at all the floating walls in this forum, it motivated me to make one myself in the apartmentnt I recently moved into..

So I'm back here to share my experience with the project..

I must say, it was more difficult than I first expected.. The main reason was the apartment wall I planned to hang this floating wall did not have timber studs like most homes do. All it has was these thin metal spacers between the concrete blocks and the dry wall..

The other reason was because I was determined to accomplish this all on my own without anyone's help.. Boy, lifting up them 0.12x2.4x1.8meter boards and lining them up on my own was a damn close to an impossible task!!!
Second time around I would definitely get a mate to help!!! Hahaha

Anyways, I chose to implant my own studs the same depth as the dry wall to the concrete blocks, I then seal them up so it's all flush like original wall. This was the base for the whole wall..

I then added LEDs to the edge of the wall as standard, utilized a LCD bracket that extends out heaps.. This allows easy access to cabling and allows watching the tv even at the dining table.. :p

I added edging strips to the side of the wall to create depth and also hides the LEDs well (even if u look against the wall. U won't see the LEDs themelves...

The wall outlets I rewired and relocated so the power, antenna, cable/satellite were hidden.. and surround sound wires all run behind the wall to the back behind the couch so no wires can be seen at all..

Paint color I chose outback sunset red.. I think I did around 7 coats to get the texture I was happy with.. And the wall being close to ceiling to floor windows, I had to make sure lighting from the sides and from above down lights did not highlight any painting flaws..

The final jigsaw was hanging the cabinet on the wall which was a feat in itself when u are on it own haha.. Esp when it comes to lining everything up as my wall, cabinet was off the ground..

Anyways here is the result.. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas.. And hope others will also have fun with these projects...

Please feel free to give me any comments or ask any questions...

    Floating Wall, The makings of....

    Pete..
