I was just thinking back to a film I watched at the cinema sometime in the early 80s where a woman for whatever reason was in some kind of assylum...not sure why..she wasnt mad...anyway she was treated really badly by the staff and with no chance of ever getting out...eventually she escaped..now I think she managed to flag down a lift and fell asleep..when she awoke she found that her lift was visiting..u guessed it..the assylum where she was promptly grabbed again..at that point i walked out cos i found it frustrating so i never saw the end....Twenty or so years on im more cynical in my old age lol and can appriciate a grim ending (btw if anyone remembers this film and can give me the name I would be very greatful...I would love to know what happend). A couple of films that spring to mind where the guy doesnt get the girl and/ or the bad guys aint the only ones to suffer are

    Alien 3 ( love it..down and depressing)
    Saw (Fincher strikes again)
American werewolf in London (gr8 ending..gr8 film)

    Once Were Warriors

The House of Sand and Fog, that was the first film to have me in floods of tears in years, (possibly since the last time i watched watership down when i was about 12). Ben kinglsey is an amazing in it.

    Get Carter.
    Cool Hand Luke.

Not so common these days as it kills the franchise as well. Of course they can always try a p*ss-poor remake (of which Stallones insult of Get Carter must stand out as one of worst).

I know Fincher has had studio difficulties so I'll not point fingers but 'The Game' had a great grim ending that was obviously pulled back from with a 3 minute happy finish tacked on. So near and yet so far.

Saw wasn't Fincher - Se7en was and has the grimest ending IMO.

One 70's film I remember had two anti-hero's on the run from the cops in a big long road movie. All I remember is the surprize ending where after a long car chase they finally give the cops the slip only to suddenly get hit by a train at a level crossing

Can anyone remember the title of this film?

That has to be the #1 grim ending.

    Also, Jude springs to mind.

I was also gutted when the guys in Heat all got caught/killed and Robert de Niro died.

    Dirty Mary Crazy Larry.
How about 'Breast Men' for the shock collision ending?

Electra Glide? Easy Rider surely! No hang on, I think EGIB did it best.

How about Million Dollar Baby and Green Mile. Those endings would make any grown man cry.

    Hi,

"Ringu" (the original Japanese version of the "Ring" movie series) has a pretty dark ending.

Ditto: "Audition", "Blade Runner", "Aliens", "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", and "The Black Cauldron" (Disney). And, you could probably also include "Snuff" in there as well.

Open Water, The Blair Witch Project, Evil Dead (the first one!). Notice, they're little "indy" pics with no initial plans for sequels franchises etc etc...

Ooh, I just remembered one of the best grim endings.... Dont Look Now. Now that is grim!

Thinking the same thing about 'Miracle Mile' I think it's called. Ends with a Nuclear Attack.

So many spoilers in one thread!!! :D

The most recent film i saw has a grim ending... The Descent! :)

Braveheart kinda does too, and the Empire Strikes Back leaves it on a bit of a bum note.

'Requiem For A Dream' definately ranks in the top 10 of grim endings.

'Dancer in the dark' is another one.

'One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest'
