Was lucky enough to see this last year, and going back for more next week. Pure delight.

Thanks for the review Kumari. On the back of some very positive buzz from AVF members, it was always on my must see list. In fact, I was all set to catch a preview this evening until a good dollop of the white stuff out our way, put the kibosh on my trip to the flicks. Boooo!

      Prefect film 10/10

A movie I could watch again and again, same applies for Roma.
In the era when superheros rule the screens, it is a delight to watch something without CGI, human to human interaction and a simple story in a era when color when looked upon first before the act of the person.

We need more movies like this on our screens today. Ali and Viggo are in prefect sync, prefect script, prefect direction and above all a prefect combination for things coming together to form a masterclass.

      Thank you.
      PEACE!
      :)

Enjoyed this and took my 11 year old to see this.

One thing though put me off - Ali's voice / mannerism reminded me off Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager!

The only movie this year which deserves the best picture Oscar nomination, and hopefully will win. 9/10

One of my favorite films of 2018 this, albeit right at the end.

Saw it. Loved it. Beautifully crafted cinema. Both leads are terrific, but I think Mortenson just about edges it. A very early strong contender for film of 2019, and I honestly can't imagine enjoying another film this much in the short term. Here is a movie that just absolutely glides. I certainly had 'something in my eye' in some of the last scenes, and the whole sequence in the Orange Bird bar had me break out into the biggest of smiles. It deserves all the praise heaped on it, and then some.
      An easy 9/10.

Saw this again over the weekend. I was worried that it would not live up to my orginal memory but I happy to say it did with ease.

Beautiful film, definitely one of the best I have seen in the 21st Century.

Mark Kermode how are you so wrong?

Went back for seconds yesterday also. Just such a lovely, human film and one that I think will end up being a future classic that people will enjoy at Christmas time. 9/10 for me now. Minus the surprise factor, it doesn't score a full 10 anymore, but it's damn close.

Mahershala Ali's Dr Shirley, and Viggo Mortensen's Tony Lip: I've rarely enjoyed two lead performances/ characters as much as these two; especially enjoyable when they begin to affect each other. Seeing Dr Shirley crack a smile and let his hair down because of something Tony says or does; and seeing Tony better himself and do something altruistic or compassionate because of Shirley's influence; well it just warms the cockles. Rarely these days do we get such warmth of spirit from a film and its just impossible to watch without a smile.

The criticisms of the film I've seen and read from (especially) left wing/ socially conscious critics not only disappoint me, they are outright mean spirited and depressing. Apparently the film's critique of racism isn't 'nuanced' enough, or 'woke' enough, or thorough enough. Its apparently '20 years behind' in the current race conversation. And of course, its a white director so its opinions are immediately invalid and 'problematic'. Apparently, Tony's character shouldn't be celebrated, because racism is fundamentally irredeemable. Etc etc.

      Here's an example from Letterboxd:

"The story of how that racist guy who says “I’m not racist, I have a black friend” met his black friend. 1 star/5"

I didn't think that I would like this film from watching the trailers, but decided to give this one a go. Having a Cineworld Unlimited card means I can see films even when I don't think I will enjoy them, purely because every once in a while you come across a gem of a film. And that's exactly what this is. An absolute gem.

      Saw this last weekend.

Green Book is pretty much as advertised, or in line with the reviews. It's fairly genteel, schmaltzy, funny in spots, but not especially searching, edgy and not something we haven't seen before.

And somehow it manages to not wholly convince, despite its basis on real world events. Some of that is down to the script, which while fine, isn't especially penetrating. Even the few scenes intended to be impactful when it comes to the culture clashes are relatively limp.

That all said, I can see why mainstream audiences will like it, as it's likeable, but it's stops well short of a great film.

Finally got around to watching Green Book last night and was pleasantly surprised to see how full the auditorium was. Guess there were a few repeat viewings amongst the crowd, judging by the roars of laughter before many of the punchlines were delivered :D

Yes the plot is rather cliched and the finale utterly predictable but it was beautifully shot and the 2 leads were excellent, so I’m unashamed to join the love-in for this heartwarming yarn. Just a pity that the U.K. didn’t get this on general release a bit earlier, as I can see Green Book becoming a Christmas favourite in years to come - 9/10
