I'm thinking of chucking in my REL Q50 for something, well a little less square or just not black ! Budget runs to about £450 and it will partner satellites, possibly AG Nucleus or similar. I'm looking at :

    Anthony Gallo M150 [active]
    Kef PSW 2500
    Monitor Audio R360

It has to work well with 2 channel music as well as big soundtrack film, trouser flapping bass would be great though I doubt I would be able to really crank up the system, so good bass at reasonable or low volumes is a must. Your opinions are greatfully received.

Have a read of all the info on the BK XLS200 on this site, it might well be up your street.

Also at the same site as above the Ruark vita 100 and there is always the importing SVS way  and the MJ acoustics sub range.

Would the MJ Refference 100 be a substantial step up from the REL Q50 in terms of quality, control and extension ?

No - the Q50 was an excellent sub in it's day and was a worthy winner of it's five star accolade from every magazine.

Ah righto, so what would be a suitable successor to the Q50, bearing in mind my room is about 14ft x 16ft ? Buget is up to about £350, and to be honest I'm tring to get away from a black box if possible but not at the expense of quality or sound.

If you want something compact I can't think of anything but the BK sub fitting the bill at your price point.

If you are going to take up Hayes offer to visit Tunbridge Wells for a demo of the Gallo speakers you will probably hear them with the Gallo sub. AV-Sales are also Velodyne dealers so you will probably be able to listen to the CHT-10 which is larger than the Gallo sub but will probably be able to significantly outperform it at a cheaper price.

The KEF PSW2500 isn't too far off the performance of the BK, and is much better looking, not too bad with music either.

It also has a bit more power than the BK which you may be able to benefit from with your room size. Available in some nice finishes too I believe.

I lived with one happily before I got the SVS bug
