ok, try to help me understand this.
ive read around the net about gfx cards over the past few days and im getting a bit confused now. looking over some old cards and the new ones has the way theyre described changed at all? as the new cards seem to run at around 500/600. now ive got another post regarding gfx cards and a few people have said that the 9700 will be better than the 9600xt, but all the specs i see the 9700 only runs at 275/270 so it looks like half the card? or am i missing something? have you got the double each figure (550/540)

    confused now...

You're only looking at the raw processing power, you're not taking into account things like the number of instruction pipelines, the number and type of shaders etc. etc. Basically, there's a lot more to the overall performance of a graphics card than just the raw clock rate of the GPU and memory.

Ultimately the numbers are irrelevent, it's what useful work results, ie. frame-rate in Doom 3, being able to use AA at 16X and AF at 8x etc, which depends on more than just the number of clock ticks per second. :)

Basically, go to Tom's Hardware and check his VGA card roundups, they're pretty comprehensive, certainly for gamers.

Nor me, the other hardware review sites don't tend to go in for group comparisons I find.
