Thanks Ed, enjoyed that review! I have an elderly pair of entry-level Grado's and all of the comments you make hold true - they sound better than the similar price competition but leak sound like crazy, feel a bit cheap and I need to take them off after an hour! At least they are consistent o_O

As an aside, for gaming the cheap Grados paired with surround processing of my Denon amp give a better sense of where you and other players are than any fancy surround headphones I've tried.

The most important thing about a headphone is first and foremost how comfortable they are...

When I saw the first picture a toilet seat popped into my head (But then folks have always said I’m weird) however I have always liked the sound of Grado headphones, but those are a bit too rich.

I do enjoy your articulation and prose, Ed.

      You are a talented writer.

      I won't be buying these headphones. :)

Good review Ed and quite interesting. Comfort. As good as any headphone can be if you can't wear them for long enough periods then someone in Grado's R&D needs a slap about the ear (pun intended). How you've described their signature is very appealing, but if were still in the market for this level of headphone the comfort remarks would have me shying away from them.

Tomorrow I'm going to audition a Lehmann Linear with my Oppo PM1s and I'm going to take the opportunity, if time allows, to try a few high end 'phones, including the Senn 800s just out of curiosity.

I've an old pair of SR80 that from time to time I still use. I had to change the pads because they were too uncomfortable, the pads on these look the same but I hope they're not, Build is awful, the headband is terrible, and my cable has broke twice. I've eight sets of cans at various prices. They are truly rubbish but I'd buy another pair if mine broke in an instant because I enjoy them, so this review doesn't surprise me at all. I think I'd probably love these should I ever be lucky enough to hear them.

      • Public criticism of forum moderation policy and continuing to be the self appointed police on how much fellow forum members should spend on kit
These are perfect headphones, worth at least twice the asking price.

Anyone who says otherwise is a fool, who should be banned from posting at this thread.

Any discussion to the contrary is against the very values on which AVF is based.

      ;)

I love the sound of my Grado headphones (slightly down the food chain from the reviewed pair), but as others have pointed out, they are not comfortable for long listening sessions - I can manage an album at a time before needing a break. They are well built, and have survived 7+ years of use, including being taken on holiday many times.
