Took delivery of my new Denon 2800 dvd player this morning, at a ridiculous £170 from empire direct. It is replacing a Pioneer DV-656. First impressions:stunning looking dvd player, beautiful gold aluminium front panel with tidy buttons and all the right logos. But my first 30 mins was annoying, i was frustrated as i had to press the pal/ntsc button to get a picture then spent 20 mins trying to get into the menu. The progressive picture at the beginning was video quality, it was terrible. I then realised you had to press the stop buttom twice after watching a bit of a dvd to get into the set up screen. Got into it changed a few settings-re-calibrated with avia and wahay a great looking picture..But i did have a great looking picture before. I can't be arsed to do a proper review, probably loads already on it, but here are the pros and cons of the player IMO: pros: blacks are much darker Edges are harder colour definition is slightly better Looks great, i mean the player It offers progressive scan.... superior cd playback, also dvd playback, not sure if this is meant to happen, but yeah sound from dvds have more 'depth' should i say. cons: crap remote very hard to send a signal to the player, you have to be head on I am sure there is something wrong with the playback of pal progressive scan Conclusion: Stunning player at a stupid price offering great picture quality, but progressive scan is not the be all and end all-but it is nice to have it! Not much of an improvement over my Pioneer but what the hell, at that price i would buy it just to put it in my av rack. I also now have no need to upgrade my dvd player cheers fred p.s make sure you set the progressive output to ntsc, pal was of really poor quality, or this could just be with my player.
