OK, got my 20" iMac today and it's gorgeous, I'm in love already :D:thumbsup:

But I have a question for you Mac experts out there -

    1. With the Safari, is it possible to make it maximise too 'fit to window' automatically rather than me having to 'drag' the corner accross to make it fit to screen every time I open Safari up?

    2. How can I transfer my iTunes library accross from my old laptop to here? I've just hooked up my iPod to the iMac and it tells me that because my iPod is synced with another computer I need to erase the iPod and basically start again

    Cheers

I dont think there is any way other than dragging the corner of the window.

Stays at the size you quit at, so once its maximised (full screen), it stays like that everytime you relaunch safari.

Me again with another question :D

Is there any way to 'hide' the items on the desktop?

First things I did when I got my iMac with regards to keeping things neat was create 2 new directories under my home folder called Downloads and Network Share.
Dragged both folders into the sidebar on Finder to create direct links to them and now when I download stuff it gets sent into either folder (make sure you've set your browser to ask where to put stuff when it downloads. Think the default on most is send to desktop!)

My desktop only has an icon for my XP virtual machine and 2 Apple scripts that I use to fix picture order within iPhoto and the other to import Divx and Xvid videos into my iTunes playlist so I can view them via Frontrow.

BTW, what happens in Safari if you press the the green button in the top left? In Firefox it makes the window full size.

Interesting question - the app should open to the size and position it was closed at. I have an extended desktop (2monitors) and just tried this and it works ...sort of.

there are 3 buttons on the top left pressing the green one will maximise the app, however, it doesn't fill the whole screen as it resizes to fit the displayed content. If you close and re-open it will open at that size again. HTH

Another way to do the resizing thing which I can't live without is to paste this little bit of script into the address field in an open Safari window

    javascript:moveTo(30,30);resizeTo(1620,960)

then bookmark it and keep it either in your menu bar in safari to quickly resize an open window, I actually have it bookmarked as my homepage so that even if someone else (my wife!) messes around with my mac then safari will always open at that size

The co-ordinates and dimensions are to suit my 20inch studio display so if you have a different size monitor you may need to tweak them a bit

    hope this helps

munkee143, if you put your bookmark to resize the window in your menu bar, you can select it by hitting Apple+x where x is it's place in the menu bar, i.e. Apple+5 will open the 5th menu bar bookmark in the current window. Might speed things up a little further for you.

    Couple more questions :D

When I hook up my digital camera to import photos into iPhoto 08, where does it actually save them on the HD? A mate has asked me to show him some pictures of the iMac, so I took some with my camera and uploaded them to the iMac with iPhoto, but for the life of me I can't see where they are stored on the HD

Also, is there a good free newsgroup for the Mac? I pay a subscription for a service and was using Newsleecher previously on Windows, but according to their forums it can't be used on a Mac...

Any help will of course be really appreciated

    Thanks

You will find them by opening iPhoto and you can either print the pictures you want directly from iLife or indeed send your mate an email directly from iPhoto by selecting the image or images then clicking on the email icon at the bottom of the iPhoto panel.

Don't know if you can hook up through MSN but you can use iChat to go to an AIM address. Put your mate's address into the Buddies panel. Click on the plus sign to add his AIM identity. Look for the image file in the iPhoto Library within the Pictures Folder in Finder (or if you know the file title use Spotlight - the magnifying glass icon on the top right of your screen) . Drop the picture onto the desktop for convenience, then iChat select Buddies - Send file when you have hooked up with your mate. Click Send and it will be on its way. Ichat Help will give you answers if you hit a problem.

Check this thread for apps of all types. For newsgroups, Unison, iGrabNews and sabnzbd are recommended.

You can connect to MSN chat (and AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, etc) via Adium.

Your pictures can be found under the Pictures short cut in Finder and then within a folder that has the name you gave to your iPhoto project.
You'll find a folder called Originals in there and your pictures within it.

Another thing you can do is drag/drop the pictures you want to the desktop.

As for a newsleecher type program. You can try NZBDrop or (as I do) use SABnzbd which runs in Firefox.
