My Google play store application has stopped working. When I touch the application it flashes and brings me back to my home screen. This means I can't download new apps or update the ones I already have. Has this ever happened to anyone and if so how did you solve the problem?
I have a Galaxy Note 2 by the way.

I've had this, can't remember what caused it though, try going in to settings/apps/all apps and clearing the Google framework cache, potentially the cache on the play store as well.

Thanks for the advice but it hasn't worked. Have cleared cache but still not able to access play store. Also seems to have affected my mp3 download app as well. Not sure if a hard reset would solve the problem?

Before you do something as drastic as a reset try a couple of things.

Force Stop Google Play Store in app manager if its running.

If that doesn't solve it, try installing the latest version over the top from here.

Don't just clear cache, clear app data for the Play Store

Hi all, thanks for the help. I've cleared the app cache and the app data and for a moment it looked like it was going to work but then it went back to my home screen. This is so frustrating! The message that keeps coming up is "unfortunately the process com. google. process. gapps has stopped". No idea what this means??
    Any other ideas?

Sorry hyperfish, I did not ignore your advice on installing the latest version, I did try, however, it wouldn't download. I just didn't mention it in my last response. My phone is now playing up even more and I keep getting the message" unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped" as well as the other message I mentioned. Phone is now slow and very un responsive. I think it's a virus that I have downloaded, any idea how to get rid of it? I have AVG anti virus software loaded on my phone but it doesn't seem to have helped.

Just re read my post and it looks like I was being s dick but it wasn't my intention.

However, sometimes app downloads are difficult to deal with in this way and the easiest way is to download via pc and transfer the app over to the device. Personally I do this with Dropbox.

Although virus is s possibility, such a deeply embedded app as the play store may still be the cause of all your issues.

Just one more thing to try. Thinking it may be a problem with your account details, perhaps try deleting your account then logging in again.

Although this is usually the cure for sync issues and the likes, as a long shot it may be worth a try.

Sounds like it's time for a factory reset. Also don't worry about using an anti virus, if you only download apps from the Play Store your chances of getting a virus are almost 0

Many thanks hyperfish for the link. I found a solution from the suggestions and all seems okay again. I reset app preferences from the application manager and that seems to have done the job. Once again, many thanks.

Hi all, it seems I spoke too soon. I can now access my Google Play store and search for apps, however, it was when I tried to download an app that I found out it's not downloading. The apps seem to be doing something but never finishes. So one hurdle cleared, another one pops up.
