Google Play Services - Huge battery drain

Starting yesterday my Nexus 5 has had awful battery drain, when I checked this morning after only being unplugged for a few hours, I had list 20% of my battery and the culprit was Google Play Services.
Something has obviously updated recently to cause this, but I've no idea what. I've followed a couple of guides and set play services to hibernate with greenify, but was hoping someone had an idea what was causing it?

I have had this same problem on and off. I believe it is a problem with the Google location services. Try turning off location reporting and reboot.

I don't use Google Now. I think it's the latest update to Google Search, as that keeps appearing in my Wake Lock software. I have it set to greenify, but it still keeps waking the phone. The battery drain has got better today since changing some settings, but it's still the 2nd biggest drain on my battery and I shouldn't need to charge during the day.

I'll keep digging

I get the same problem on my Note 2 from time to time and as limegreen said above. Force stop any google service's then do a reboot and that normally sorts it out.

All the Google apps are the first to be disabled on any new Android I get.
Defeats the point of using Android. The battery drain issue is with the location service, this is an integral part of Android and central to Google's future development plans for android. Google also supply some of the best android apps. IMO no one has a better navigation, browser or email app.

I disagree mate. There are plenty of apps which are just as good if not better. As for defeating the point of Android, that's nonsense! Have you tried Cyanogen Mod? Not a trace of Google apps and works much better. A lot of Chinese phones have no Google access and work great.

As for the Play Store, there's very little on their that's decent and not stuffed full of ads. My point is that it's perfectly acceptable to use Android without hooking into the Google ecosystem. Never use Google Now, Location Services, Hangouts, Gmail or any of those other rubbish Google streaming apps that punt mags, games, movies and music. About the only useful one is Google Maps and I can live without that since it doesn't even offer proper offline use.

I think we can all see what Google's future development plans are for Android which is why they are putting more of their own apps on the platform. It's also why the likes of Sony and Samsung offer rival apps that do the same thing.

Ultimately, this is the beauty of Android; if you like Google apps great, if you don't you can customise and choose replacements.

Yes, I have tried Cyanogenmod and supplies a very good and polished version of android. But you also risk invalidating warranty by installing. I know that they also supply an easy way to install google apps.

The Play store has plenty of good free apps that are completely free of ads. Many apps are only available from the Play store.
I agree that is the beauty of android but you are using half its power.
