Hi

I have a 32 inch Toshiba Regza 2008 model which has a HDMI port .

Simple question . If I buy either a Google Chromecast with Google TV or an Amazon Firestick, will they actually work with the TV , being such an old model now.
The TV is working absolutely fine .

Thanks

I'm currently using an older Fire TV Stick on a 2010 LG LCD without any issues. I don't know for sure, but my instinct is that you should be fine. It might be worth checking which HDMI revision you have though and whether current streaming devices require a particular type.

HDMI is a fairly specialised connection, essentially just carrying audio and video. This means the devices on each end are pretty much independent of each other, it's not like USB where the peripheral is being controlled from the host device and needs to be specifically supported.

So as long as they have an video and audio format in common they should work.

Standard audio formats haven't changed and I'd expect the Chromecast and Firestick to work fine at an HD resolution which pretty much everything with HDMI should accept as input.

If you have anything else connected that lets you set it's output resolution then try setting it to 1280x720 (HD) and 1920x1080(FHD) and see if everything is displayed correctly.

I have used:

Google Chromecast, 1st to 3rd generations
Amazon Firestick 1st to current generations
Now TV devices all 5 generations
Roku devices 4 generations

With 2008 Panasonic Plasma so don't see any issues.

Thanks that sounds promising. When you say which HDMI revision , I assume you mean version. I didnt know there were differing versions of HDMI . Is that right?

Thanks and that all sounds promising . Will hopefully buy one or the other soon and will take your tip about the resolution.

Thanks Fred . That gives me good confidence and Ill hopefully be buying one or the other shortly . Would you be able to suggest which you prefer out of the Chromecast and Amazon Firestick ?

Yes - version/revision. Your 2008 TV will probably come with HDMI 1.3 or 1.3a, whereas the latest high-end TVs and game consoles come with HDMI 2.1.

I think HDMI is backwards compatible to a certain extent but you need both source and display to be equally matched to benefit from any new features.

As mentioned above, what's probably more important in your case is that your TV supports the resolution(s) your chosen streaming device outputs, so check the specs of each.

Fire TV stick / box has own remote and many other reasons.
Have not tried Google Chromecast with Google TV.
