As I write, the London delegation are making their final presentation. Go for it! Thanks to Chirac and all of his help in securing the Finnish votes. Four hours until we get the results...

I'd actually prefer it if Paris won. London's transport system clearly can't cope with the number of people who are there already.

Besides, London's ugly, and Paris is beautiful. I know where I'd rather visit.

let someone else drown in debt - some previous winners are still saddled with the debts

Unless they are going to get some serious funding from the lottery I don't think we can afford this

Good Luck London. I think this would be great for the country & capital. East London will just sit and rot otherwise.

Not sure we deserve it. 20 years of closing school playing fields hardly constitutes 'promoting sport'.

On the other hand, as loathe as I am to see Blair trying to claim all the credit, Coe might yet be the future Tory leader on the back of this...

I think the lottery could easily fund it.

    The area needs regeneration.

If we do get it it will be mainly down to Seb Coe and team

    Have you seen our team?

    Seb Coe
    Steve Redgrave
    Matthew Pinsett
    Princess Anne
    Denise Lewis

Three of them alone are Olympic legends

Let the French have it. Paris is only a couple hours away on the Eurostar.

Plus, if the French get it, i won't have to battle on the underground with hoards of fat amercians for 4 weeks.

    HI,

I hope London DOESN'T win the vote for the 2012 Olympics! What can we offer? Oh yes, London's got...

    - clean streets (homeless people and beggars on every corner)
    - safe city to walk around in (large volumes of street crime)
    - lovely housing (graffitti-covered estates)
    - reliable train systems (probably the worst public transport system in the world)
    - the great and the famous live here (Abu-Hamzar, Geri Halliwell and the Beckhams)
    - a worthy heritage (the Millennium Dome)
    - it's a great place to drive (traffic jams)
    - visiting London' so cheap (the £8 congestion charge)
    - comfortable and welcoming hotels (expensive, crappy accommodation)
    - and lovely animals flying past you (vermin-ridden pigeons spraying their :censored: everywhere)
    - our Brilliant and honest leader (WMD in 45 minutes? Education, education, education? No top-up fees to students)

Yep! If I were on the Olympic Committee, I'd be really proud of London too! Hell, even Iraq would be a better place to stage the Olympics, than London! :rotfl:

Good luck London. Wasn't too bothered until recently but now really hope they get it.

According to the IOC, London's transport is up to the job. Also they have plenty of good venues (or will have) for all the events.

Plus it'd be a bonus to p%$& Chirac off

    RDB :)

likewise, I don't want it in London - but I really don't want the French to win it.

I hope we win and then hand it over to Madrid :smashin:

    Hahaha! That's a good one!

On a recent trip to Germany, I asked someone at the ticket office if it was possible to travel to Munster by train. They spoke excellent English, explained how weekend tickets worked, directed me to the correct platform, and printed out a timetable. All done with a smile, and all done for free.

Can you imagine a German with no English asking the same question at a British ticket office? You can't get more than a grunt or an ill-tempered scowl if you're fluent in English!

The only good thing that can come out of London winning is egg on the faces of those that have attached themselves to this pointless charade.

It is enough to say that we came ahead of the French - to win the Olympics as well is the icing on the cake :)

This may be heresy, but bear with my ignorance here.

What is the benefit of holding an Olympics (aside from Prestige - or is that it)?

I mean - everyone goes on about regenerating an area - but surely that could happen anyway. My ignorance again - but who pays for it all? The taxpayer? If so, then we could probably regenerate the same area for less cost without the games.

There must be more to it - as I say, I claim ignorance here.

I would guess that there are quite large IOC contributions.

It simple maths. Pay for the regeneration of an area with no extra income, or pay for the regeneration of an area, with the added income an Olympics gives.

It will happen during the school holidays when there is a lot more capacity on the networks.

Looking forward to the ladies beach volleyball on Nelson's Column, so to speak

Thats a very good point Steve. :)

The government has an opportunity to inspire the young generation of this country and get our kids off the internet and onto the sports fields :)

It will be embarrassing if we don't do well.

(PS I am trying to use the spell checker so you don't take the ****) :D
