Good kit under £700?

I'm looking for some good kit on a budget. Went into my local specialist store today and got a few suggestions to combine with the the stuff I've read on here + in What Hi-Fi.
I need a DVD player, Receiver and Speakers all for under £700 (closer to £500 or £600 the better)

Been looking at these receivers:
Denon AVR-1507
Sony STR-DA1200ES

My local store were trying to sell me the Sony (£400), plus the Sony DVP-NS92V DVD player (£100) and leaving me to get the speakers myself (they didnt have any inside budget)

I like the look of What Hi-Fi's suggestion of the Denon plus the Toshiba SD-360E DVD player and QAcoustics 1010 5.1 Speakers. Would it be worth swapping those speakers for a cheaper pair like the KEF KHT1005 (they also look nicer, so more chance of me being 'allowed' to buy them)

Anyone have any completely different suggestions? Blatantly obvious alternatives that ive missed? Would i be better with a 'Home Cinema in a Box' on this budget?

tbh on a £700 budget, £400 on the amp is overkill.....

unless you plan on upgrading the speakers sometime soon?

personally i'd look at AV amps around £250-300, either Denon or Yamaha or Cambridge Audio for the usual worthwhile makes at the price point....

for DVD player, well, i'd say stick with a decent but cheap model, generally models between £100-200 are not going to be all that much different....if you are only using it on a standard display (ie up to 40in) get something around £100...

that leaves you £300 for a speaker set ;)

for the money, well, plenty of options, a number of satellite/subwoofer combos......or pop to Richer Sounds and grab a pair of Gale floorstander fronts, bookshelf rears and matching centre, wont include a subwoofer worth buying at that particular price i dont think, but if you can save up till you got around £200, then come back to these forums and check the trade section, you should find a nice older REL sub going for that price which will give very good performance for the cash ;)
