Just spoken to Sky about the possibility of having a 2nd Sky+ installed for my kids to use when we move soon.

They have offered to supply a new Sky+ box, dish, and install everything for £199. They will also waive the 2nd Sky+ tenner.

Seems like us customers who had Sky right at the start might actually get something reduced for once:)

S'funny ... when I put in our 2nd sky+ I was told that they would have to charge me the £10 for the 2nd box but would still waive it on the 1st ... wish they'd get their pricing policy sorted and publish it !!

Might have been because you are getting them to do the install wheras I did it all myself ...

Nice sig witters ... haven't heard Clutching At Straws for a while ... must go and dig it out ;-)

Sky charge ridiculous prices for second sets. It's a joke IMHO

Yes it is but there are reasons.
Security is important and too many mirror users would require high admin costs to monitor the phone requirment, keep the price highish and you manage the take up. Without the phone requirment tens of thousands of cards would be sold or passed onto friends or to the guy in the pub. The result would be potential SKY customers not signing up or current subscribers cancelling after getting a cheaper card from another source.

Neither option is good for long term growth/profitability and eventually would force SKY to increase subscriptions above and beyond what they normally do to recoup lost revenues.

I fully expect that SKY in due course will license multi tuner/decoder STB's which can output two or more independent channels from a single smartcard. This will at a stroke match the best security a phone connection provides while offering a premium hardware solution with or without an additional subscriptions.
