Hi all, ive decided to take the plunge & buy an Onkyo SR605 amp, so im after a good set of 5.1's to show off the amp capabilities. As always money is tight so looking for a bargain really! My budget would be around £250-£300 MAX. any good recommendations out there? Ive got no problem in buyng a 2nd hand set as well.
Any & all help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the KEF KHT 3005 (Non SE) speaker system driven by an Onkyo 606 and they sound very good. There is not much difference between the 605 and 606. If you can get hold of these speakers they'll be worth it.

    Hope that helps

I bought my Kef 2005.2 from the classifieds on these Forums.

Really nice sound. An all round excellent speaker within its class, and just within your budget. So they are out there.Recommended.

    Good Luck,

I wonder how the 1005.2 sounds compared to the 3005 ?

Has anyone compared them on a practical level. E.g. in a demo ?

Might need to up your limit a little, used to run a 605 with an Epos ELS3 5.1 system valued at 900 pounds and my father uses his 605 with Wharfedale 9.1's all round and a BK 300 sub. Seems like you are going to be too strong on power and low on sound with this budget.

The Wharfedale 9 HCP system is £300 on Superfi at the moment, with the walnut edition £50 more.

The Tannoy F1 Custom set up is only £400 at Peter Tyson

There is a set of MA Radius 90 5.1 speakers (4xR90, R180 & a R360 Sub) in red for £350 on the classifieds too.

Hope this is food for thought.

    Rob.

I would recommend the Wharfedales.....have a slightly beefier version in 5.1 than the 9 HCP above (9.1 fronts, 9.CS centre and Sw250 subwoofer), but they are fantastic speakers and, for the money, I think they 9 HCP would be a great bargain......

This set used to be discounted down to £550 at one stage and I nearly bought a this set 2 years ago when I was on the hunt for speakers as there was a set in rosewood being sold on the classifieds.

Not sure if you can audition any speakers where you are (are you near superfi ?) but it may be of help. Also, will you be using the system for just movies / tv and games or music too? This will also have an impact on your decision.

You could always buy bit by bit so you have a better system. A nice pair of L&R 2nd hand speakers first, then rears, sub then a front centre. Only a suggestion.

    Cheers.
