Thread title says it all really.

I want this amp (well, i ideally wanted the sr5300 but cant really afford it) and will be buying it over the next week or so but i thougt id find out some owners opinions first.

I'll be updating my Sony to this and will be running the Mission listed below, im not looking to get the addition centre rear speaker just yet but will be in the near future.

    So, reviews and advice please!

    Thanks,

    Neil

Had an SR-5300, suffered hissing on all channels, clicking noises when operating remote, optical and co-axial digital input drop-outs.
Replacement fine so far only had it a few days.
RS are allegedly no longer stocking SR-4300 or SR-5300 because of so many faulty units ?
    Marantz SR-5400 due out September.
    Made In China

Again - I'd recommend an AVR1803 from Denon over the SR4300. Available from http://www.empiredirect.co.uk for £198 if my memory serves me correctly.

    A notably better receiver.

I bought the Richer Sounds Extended Warranty when i bought the Sony a few years ago. It Offers 50% guaranteed buyback when you trade your old stuff in. Hence i 'Have' to buy somet from RS!

I'll phone them tomorrow re the stock levels.

Is the Denon 1803 6.1 discrete?

Yes the 1803 does support 6.1 discrete sound formats.

    Neil,

My Marantz SR-4300 from RS is working perfect, no problems whatsoever. Very pleased with the sound and the quality. Although with the new temp price on Denon and the new Yamaha-440 it is a very tough decision.

When I decided for the Marantz it was partly because of that it has CSII which is so much better than DPLII when you use analogue signals, in both music and movies. A friend of mine have connected a pair of Dynaudio Audience 52s and compared it with a NAD C320BEE and the sound was not bad at all.

But now with new amps out, everyone keep raving about the new Yamaha-440 (or HTR-5640RDS if you want in silver) which now has components inputs which is unique in the price class, and it has true 6channel amp as well as new benchmark sound. And the Denon 1803 is also now a superb choice for the £100 lower price! By the way, don't forget that you can price match at RS and they always beat prices with £10, so you could get the Denon for £196 (I include delivery cost = £206). The Yamaha probably set you around £217 if they price match unbeatable's £227.

But from what I have read here on the forum, someon got the 5300 for £240 at RS and that RS are selling the 4300 for £200.

Anyway, whatever you choose I'm sure will be a good one

I have had my SR4300 for about a month now.

All I can say is excellent. It has replaced my old PM44mkII SE. It easily sounds better, probably down to the increased power over the old amp.

The fact that I can now also watch my films in DD and DTS is just the icing on the cake.

For £200 you cannot go wrong. It's very easy to setup, I found the menus simple to use, at least you don't need to plug a screen in to see them! The remote control is good too, I have connected the amp to my CD player so I can control that as well!

The only disapointing thing is the fact that the volume knob doesn't rotate when I adjust the volume from the remote ;)

Wasabi - Richer Sounds don't sell the AVR1803 to the best of my knowledge.

the 4300 is definitely an improvement over the sony.
i had the sony and it was absolutely terrible for music.
changed to the marantz, and a big improvement, with films also, but the biggest difference is if you use it for music.
if i had had the cash at the time, i would have plumped for the 5300.

Ok I phoned my local RS in Cambridge and they're currently out of stock but will be getting them in on Tuesday.

However he said he'd give me a Yammy 530 for £199 instead of the £249 its advertised at so now i truly am confused???

    Whats this Yammy like anyone?

    Cheers

I'm not a yamaha fan in any way shape or form. I didn't like the sound, aesthetics or build quality.

Definitely listen to it before you even consider it.

    Neil,

Don't let RS try and sell you an old receiver. The 530 is only a 5channel amp. Too bad you can't get the Denon 1803.

I think you don't want a black amp right? Then 5300 is probably out of question as you can only get it in black for £240 from what I can recall from another thread.

Although I own the 4300, I probably would suggest you the Yamaha HTR-5640RDS in silver as it is today has a couple of advantages over 4300 as it is a new model. On the paper weaker amp, but I wouldn't be surprised that it would sound equally powerful, it has 2 component inputs which is good for your xbox and davs550 (4300 has nil), famous Quad Cinema DSP, 6 channel amp which now can handle DTS-ES, DDEX etc as 4300, the Yam40series looks much better/more expensive than the Yam30series, and although I and many haven't had any problems with Marantz, many many has had a problem and you are less likely to get a Yam faulty amp.

I thought the Richer Sounds buy back option is not anything to do with trading in an old product for a new one.

It is purely buying back the old product for up to 50% of it’s original price. So you would not be restricted to buying from RS once you sold your stuff back.

    Hi All,

Been reading through this thead today, and all i must add is i love my SR4300.

Haven't had any trouble with it (Touch Wood !!), and the only niggle i have with mine is the 2 second gap on digital audio, when it changes mode or you select a different chapter.

But then i've got used to that, and apart from that it's a very good sounding amp for music and for films.

I would prefer a SR5300, but after reading about the new range coming out soon, i might be able to pick up a bargain ?? or even buy a new SR5400 unit if the price it right ?? And it works ok with no faults ?? :zonked:

Good luck Neil, with your new unit.....i hope you enjoy it as much as i have.

    Cheers 4 now

I am 99% certain the RS Supercare 50% buyback means that you DO have to buy something else from RS and you then get a reduction of whatever 50% of the original purchase was, they won't just give you back say £100 if you bought something for £200 a couple of years ago.
