Thanks for the review Cas. I had, unrealistically, fairly high hopes for this, but well, Hollywood I guess.

Thinking I might wait for home release now but the thought of the big screen outing still tempts me.....first world dilemmas!

Saw it in 3D IMAX yesterday and it looked and sounded fantastic. It's big, dumb, pointless, script-less, silly, nonsense and I actually had fun. 7/10 for me.

You can see, hear and feel the layers and layers of studio notes as they bang on about backstory and character motivation, till the whole over-egged pudding becomes one giant omelette. Instead of the human action being a dramatic device to ramp up the excitement for the next giant stompy monster mayhem, it just throws sand in the gears and bogs the whole film down. It's like nobody involved has read Macbeth! That makes the real monster in this movie the script, followed closely by the acting. But if you can suffer and squirm through all the bits where people are talking, resist the urge to attack the screen every time the obligatory 'cute' girl appears, then the special effects are fantastic. The end sets up a sequel but the reviews and most likely the box office beyond opening weekend will not be kind.

Off to see it today with my Godzilla mad 14 year old son. After @raigraphixs post on it and now your review, I will go in to just enjoy the fights and try to remember they forgot to add a story! :D

I quite enjoyed Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla - is this an improvement or around the same? :)

This type of film is exactly what I built my cinema room for! Think it will look and sound fantastic when released, will definitely be holding off seeing it at the cinema.

Very believable score. Interesting to see how the reviews for this are all over the place.

I see that glossy toilet paper known as Empire have given it one star. Yet they gave that monstrosity Ghostbusters 2016 three stars. Pretty much says it all...

reviewers try to be "individual" - so even endgame can have some nay sayers

I suspect it is a 6 to 8 out of 10 film depending on what you enjoy

I will go on Tuesday to the local Imax as it is my kind of nonsense and that is the cheap day to go to that cinema

Yes, it's not very often that they only award one star to something like this. The last time i can remember that happening was way back with the first Taken film. I genereally find that their ratings are awarded one star more than I would have given. But then GB 2016 was, as you say, a one star film if there ever was one. Pure cinematic dross.

Thanks for the Review, Cas - saw the trailer at our local Cinema right before watching John Wick 3. Even there, the Monsters looked great but Character after Character standing around gawping close to the action & not being hurt & not running away didn't sell it to me. Will wait to rent....if that

Fixes many of the problems with 'Godzilla (2014)' - mainly, more monsters less humans. However, there's still too much family nonsense and time spent with tiresome one dimensional characters. Charles Dance (a man born to ham it up as a villain on the big screen) is largely wasted and is one of the few characters that actually could have used more screen time. Kyle Chandler & Vera Farmiga are pretty game but their characters (along with the 'Stranger Things' kid) could have been removed entirely.

Michael Dougherty loves the source material and that comes across whenever the monsters appear on screen. Each Kaiju's reveal is wonderfully done and their various calamitous encounters are a joy to watch. My only complaint is that some of these battles didn't continue for long enough. Rodan in particular felt a little short changed. Bear McCreary's score is fantastic. No mid-credits scene, only one at the end.

      Some of the main highlights:

The Ghidorah chant as he was awakened
Godzilla biting one of Ghidorah's heads off
      They used the Oxygen Destroyer!
Mothra theme song as she came out of chrysalis
      Mothra's fairies
      Godzilla revival and power up
Godzilla stomping into Boston as his theme song played accompanied by human cruisers and squadrons of fighter jets
      Ghidorah power station power up
Mothra descending in heavenly rays...followed by Rodan showing up and knocking her out of the sky
      Mothra impaling Rodan
      Mothra powering up Godzilla
Mothra limping onto Godzilla and saving his life by flying into Ghidorah's beams
Magma Godzilla burning Ghidorah to ashes & eating one of his heads like squid sushi
      End credits and theme song
There's a Kaiju in the Loch Ness :D

Probably the best Hollywood produced Kaiju movie imo, besting 'Pacific Rim'.

Edit: The terrible black levels & low contrast of commercial digital projection does the picture no favours. I suspect the 4K HDR version on home video will look incredible. See this on IMAX Laser/Dolby Cinema if you're able.

Just got back from the 3D IMAX Laser, amazing movie for big boom and great 3D.

HDR at home will be amazing, some very contrasty scenes.

'omg ZILLA' some guy says that in the trailer. Not sure if it was when the script landed through his front door and the realisation hits him - this is how serious people taking his acting ability.....

I think I will pass and instead give 'Marshland' Spanish film/subtitles I recorded last night a blast this weekend.

Well I watched it this afternoon. Nothing special for me. My lad enjoyed it though.

As someone said previously, the LFE will be mental at home though! I may grab the UHD 4K just for those alone.

      6/10 from me.

Saw it tonight, I enjoyed it, the action scenes were great, but that script was terrible and really dragged it down... Why oh why do we need to keep cutting to humans, show us the monster on monster action, it's a Godzilla film! That being said its a 6.5/10 for me, if it could be recut I think it's would be far better a bit shorter

Agree. In every monster fight they kept having to cut to those idiot humans milling around beneath their feet. I just wanted them to **** off out of the way.

The script for this should have been burned with fire.

Saw this yesterday and still can’t believe how such awful dross is even green-lit by studies. Yes, some of he action sequences did look spectacular but surely people want a story or a decent script too. Some of the dialogue was cringe worthy. Most of human interaction was just in the form of either explaining to the viewer why people were doing things, Why the titans were acting the way they were or where the film location would move to next and why.

Maybe it’s the state of cinema now, but I feel most big budget studio monster movies in years gone by would have at least tried to get the story, acting and script right too - not just focused on ‘the ride.’ Even without CGI, the original King Kong, Jason and Argonauts or the original Clash of the titans are monster movies that you can watch again. This was just truly awful and never mind a repeat viewing, it’s a pity I can’t unwatch or unhear it.

      2/10 for me

Saw this tonight and i enjoyed it a lot......
There is no script in sight but the fights and action are bringing me what i wanted from this kind of movies, to be entertained and i was !

      7.5 out 10.
