I feel sorry for the people in this area, but maybe after this storm the American government will realise that global warming is a reality and needs to be considered much more seriously.

Dont worry Ethics, after recent events they are ultra-monitoring the weather conditions. They wont put their plane in any danger. They will all be fine.

Thankyou for your concern - I am not panicing or anything, just slightly nervous about it knowing that these storms can be irratic and shift direction very quickly..... but its most likely to not come close to them.

Jet planes fly way above dangerous weather, and (as others have already said) their flight plan will take them away from danger. If the hurricane does change direction, the plane will be diverted away.

Exactly. Maybe now they'll get the hint that they are not immune. God help those in it's path.

its looking very dodgy isn't it? do you think there will come a time when the land is uninhabitable?

maybe they need to build those buildings like the ones in stingray that can be lowered into the ground.

    Seriously though its very worrying.

I agree to an extent but having a look at some of the articles, Galveston (the expected landfall) was virtually destroyed by a Hurricane in 1900 as well (over 8000 people died) so climate change or not, I suspect that this weather comes with the territory.

I hope that there is nothing like that loss of life this time however.

Yes I agree, but how many times in the last hundred years has America had two Category 4-5 hurricanes within 4 weeks of each other ?

I think (but don't quote me) Andrew in 1992 was either the first or the second of two biggies, the other of which just missed.

Well, if that was the only thing, then maybe. However, other things like our changing seasons (early fruit ripening, crocuses growing in September) and the melting of glaciers in Peru, the hole in the ozone layer, are all things which we will ignore at our peril.

We will not destroy the planet. The planet has already shown that it can fight back, and shake us off, like a troublesome flea in a dog's coat.

i heard yesterday that some govt watchdog has said that if air travel keeps growing at it current rate then all other CO2 emissions must cease immediately to avoid damage to the planet.

i'm looking on the bright side - i'll be six feet under when it gets really bad because our genaration (well some at least) wont wake up to its responsibilities.
