As Gladiator is coming out simulaniously in R1 and R2 and the extras are the same, will anyone still buy the R1.

The price seems to be the same, and it could be argued that the R2 (PAL) version looks better, so is there a reason to buy the R1 version?

I've gone for an R2 copy.

Look at it this way, if we all buy the R2 copy then it will vindicate the studio's decision to release (almost) simultaneously and maybe we will see a lot more of this in the future instead of waiting months for a post US release.

From what I've heard the R1 copy has slightly MORE extras than R2.

I would buy R1 anyway just in case of BBFC cuts.

As far as I'm concerned R1 wins MOST of the time but when R2 is clearly better then I go for it.

    Cheers

    Popester,

Had Gladiator been released at different times then I would have had a R1 copy in my hand a long time ago....instead of waiting for them to release it at the same time as R2!

They did'nt move the R2 release forward they pushed the R1 release back!

Cheapest UK price I've seen is £19.99, Amazon.com are doing the R1 for $17.99. I always get discs 'in bulk' so never pay more than $3.00 per disc S&H.

R1 may have a touch less resolution (I've never really noticed with anamorphic material), but plays at the correct speed, the price swings R1 for me.

Also, may upgrade to pro-scan next year, there is no non-computer PAL equivalent yet.

    Pete,

Good point if you are going to upgrade to Pro-Scan at some point than go for R1!

I'm going to buy the region 1 version, I generally find region 1 to be far superior to region 2, as most people do. But would welcome reading reviews/comparisons. Even if they are exactly the same I’ll probably favour region 1.

Region 1: 25min of Deleted scenes - 7min Montage of unused footage

Region 2: 20min of Deleted scenes - can't see any Mantage mentioned!

    You choose?

Info from play247 complain to them if it's wrong (hehehehe [IMG])

THe cheapest I have seen so far is Play at 17.99 for the R1 and R2.

From what I have read there is NO difference between them.. Infact, the R2 has more subtitles than the R1, so infact it has more.

Although I have no hard evidence on this, I have always found the picture of an R2 disk to be better.. So, on that front surely the R2 would be the best choice.

So its down to the extras and film content, and I have been reliably informed that they are both IDENTICAL!

Check out 'http://www.dvdrumble.co.uk/', which is a site which compares R1 to R2s.

They have Gladiator down as a draw, as there are no BFCC cuts and no differences in the extra.

For a change, its going to be hard to justify buying a R1 disk.

From DVD rumble.. The R1 and R2 have:-

    - Commentary by director Ridley Scott, editor Pietro Scalia, and cinematographer John Mathieson.

    - "HBO First Look" Making Of Documentary

    - The Learning Channel's "The Bloodsport of a Gladiator"

    - 25 minutes of Deleted Scenes with director's commentary

    - 7 minute montage of additional unused footage

    - Interview with Oscar nominated composer Hans Zimmer

    - A "Lucious" production diary written by actor Spencer Treat Clark.

    - Behind-the-scenes photo gallery

    - Storyboard comparisons

    - Production notes

    - Original theatrical trailer and television spots

According to this source, they are going to be EXACTLY the same

Yeah, I would have gone for R1 too had it been earlier. However one point not mentioned is that few of my family and friends have multi region players therefore I can lend them my R2 copy which I know they will appreciate.

As for the extras - I can't see any difference at all.

Region 1 Gladiator for me too.

It's cheaper and I like giving my business to companies that don't shaft me (although Play and Blackstar are excellent for Region 2 to be fair -so I guess it's just because it's cheaper then).

    Region One.

Why? Cos if this RCE thing gets any more advanced and we are FORCED to chose only R1 or R2 then I know which one I'm sticking with!

Have about 100 R1 discs and about 20 R2. May even consider not bothering with R2 anymore actually.

I'm getting the R1 version, the main reason being that the extra 4% speed up with R2 UK discs means that I'm not watching exactly what the director intended (There are some scenes shot at 60fps which at the cinema seemed like slow-mo shots which won't on UK disc). Also can anybody confirm that the DTS on R2 is 5.1, whereas the DTS on R1 is 6.1 ES? My theory is this, they will use the orignal 6 channel master for 5.1 (6 ch, 20 bit master) but use a new 7 channel, 24-bit master for 6.1. If so does that mean that the R1 DTS ES will sound better? I leave it to you guys....

R1 for me too. I'll never pay HMV or Virgin £20 for a (usually) inferior R2.

    I'm going for Region 1!

Despite the R1 DVD having less subtitles (so what!) it does have the extra Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround sound soundtrack, which can be useful for those who don't have a full 5.1 set-up, like myself.

Plus, you can guarantee that come November 21st, Region 1 users will have the DVD in their hands! Region 2 users, will be left standing, due to "leaves on the line, so we couldn't get the disc to the shops on time" or some other similarly lame excuse, that we always get for "late R2 arrivals".

How many of you have gone on the announced day of release for R2 discs, and been told it's been "put back" or "delayed" or some other such junk?! Region 1 users won't get that kind of p*ss-poor treatment unless there is something major, like the company wanting to add additional material to the disc. That's the only excuse they ever use, otherwise the disc is available exactly when it was promised! (Maybe it's because Britain is reknowned for being useless at time-keeping?!)

It won't happen, Popester. This is a trial thing, and there's a high chance that R2 users will find they don't get the disc on the same day as all of those who have pre-ordered a R1 version. You'll get given some crap explanation for the disc not being available, and have to wait a couple of weeks, more than likely, seeing as that's what happens with every other UK R2 DVD release!

Plus, apart from this DVD, there's only one other DVD I can think of, that has had the exact same R2 treatment, as the R1 equivalent, and that was for the 2-disc set of "Magnolia". Every other time though, we get shafted here in the UK, and I'm fed up of it!

Region One all the way! Due to the following reasons

    1) I get it early
    2) Its Cheaper
    3) Better Quality Disc and Packaging
    4) Its Region 1
    5) I hate 50Hz Flicker

R1 - this has a DTS ES 6.1 soundtrack that the R2 is missing (ES/EX/discrete, I can never remember which is which! <LOL> ).

    There is no option!
    REGION ONE ALL THE WAY!
No matter what, even if they look like they are exactly the same according to press releases and reviews, there is always something there that makes the R1 disc better.
Whether it be that there is acctually something missing from the special features on the R2 or 4 disc compared to the R1, or that it is always the case that the menus and the packaging on the R1 one look a lot better in general.
The R2 and 4 discs will probably come out in those clear, big goofy cases that we are so used to, but of course the R1 disc set will have some sort of version on the Armary(?) cases that we all love. Once again, my bet goes on the R1 set.
R2 and 4 had better start doing something pretty special soon to make me change from always buying R1.
Of course there are a couple of small exceptions to this rule......

I've pre-ordered Gladiator on Region One from Play247.com. The cost is £17.99 delivered (Recorded Delivery). Money not taken from credit card until shipped. I posed the question (R1 or R2?)on one of the newsgroups and the vote was that R1 would be better on balance. It was a close run thing though.

Anyone thought that the popularity of Region One might have something to do with the fact that it's slightly naughty? Rember CB radios? They died a death when the legal bands came into force! People like to be rebels on the quiet!!

BTW, I'm still going for R1 all the way. I have heard though that the R2 will contain a DTS-ES track. This begs the question which one? A 5.1 matrixed ES or 6.1 ES? All I have seen is 5.1 on DVD sites information.
