I remember getting stung by the original Blu-ray with the insanely bad sharpening on the extended scenes. Glad this is not a repeat performance.
Now, Forrest Gump is out soonish and THAT I would be interested in. I genuinely have seen something new in that film every time I've watched it. 4k would be a good enough excuse for another trip round the block.

Also, nice stealth Alien Covenant diss. Which is fair enough, but it had the best tense, all-android flute lesson scene in the history of film. You can't deny that, and that achievement will stand for quite some time.

      Love this film,

“Queer giraffes” is one of the best scenes for sure

Thanks for the review Cas, looks like you have some great films to rewatch in the coming weeks :D

It had the only ever all-android flute lesson in the history of film. Something no one has ever done before or since. There may be a reason for that...;)

Nice review Cas and my steelbook is staring at me from the shelf ready for playing.

Not sure this is the thread for arguing about Ridley's other films though.

      Casimir started it...
As this is the thread to discuss the review, it seems OK to comment on his comments imo.

What is a shame with both this and the Hostiles review is the lack of review of the DV.
I started the Gladiator UHD in HDR10 and then flipped over to watch in DV. The DV 'version' looked slightly better to me and also had the benefit of not accentuating grain on my Oled as HDR10 can do.
Probably something to do with Oled Light only being at default 50, rather than the 100 default of HDR10. So perhaps similar to when watching a UHD with HDR off in that regard.

I'd be interested to hear any thoughts you have on this. For ages I've been asking for a DV vs HDR10 comparison using the same display. Any insights you've gained if you've compared other discs would be greatly appreciated.

My thoughts/comments are in Post #28 of Dolby Vision
Which would be the thread to discuss this further. I don't want to win the most off topic posts in one thread award for today...:)

Just a thought here , members with DV , HDR10 capable displays could always do their own user review/thoughts on a DV Vs HDR10 comparrison in the user review section. It would certainly make it easier to find on a disc by disc basis for other members .

Been looking forward to this after the mess of the previous Blu-ray releases. Now all I need is an amazing remaster and the extended cut of 1492 4k Blu-ray!

Do any avf film reviewers have oled displays? I'm not doing other tech down but how can black level be discussed seriously on an lcd ? Not so much in this review but it's something that grates with me tbf.

In my favourite films of all time very shortlist. Everything about it is top class. When I get a 4K player this will be my first disc.

Obviously I have a Blu-ray version, but there seems to be some complaint about it...?

There is nothing wrong with the newer bluray. If you have the UK edition you will probably have that one (massive threads elsewhere). And the newer bluray still looks great. But this 4K release looks somewhat better from all accounts. Cant wait to find out myself!

I must have the decent one then I assume.

It looks mighty fine to me.

I still need to get the 4K one. Naturally.

Went to my local Covent Garden Fopp today to pick it up, and they said they only had one copy coming in and it hadn't arrived...:thumbsdow Should have pre ordered it from Zoom.

Ordered placed. Now will just have to wait... Still got it for £18.00; so not bad I suppose...:)

@Casimir Harlow - Great review but is there any chance when a UHD Blu Ray has Dolby Vision that we can get a HDR10 / Dolby Vision comparison. A lot of the UHD Blu Rays are getting the Dolby Vision included now so it's something I (and others by the looks of some posts) are really interested in.

Agreed, but I think we'd have to have a whip round and donate Cas an LG OLED.
