    Loose ribbon cable?

Check that the secondary ide channel hasn't become disabled too - it sounds like you haver the power connection, but lost the ide somehow.

Yup check your cable. Also check in device manager your secondary IDE Channel (under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) is being detected and is working correctly, and is not disabled.

Are your devices being recognised when your PC POSTS at boot up?

Umm seems a little odd they'd both die at the same time.
    What make were they?
You did use a different cable when you tried them in another PC didn't you?

Well found that dvd drive still detects dvd's but not cd's. The cd writer is called Everspring it was a special from Ebuyer it's 40x12x48 and was £33 plus vat. So i think I'll upgade to Plexta.
