What are they supposed to do?
No one else who was able to look after it wanted it, the zoo had been trying.
Do you think the keepers didn't cry over that decision?

This is fairly old news but i'm pretty sure a number of zoo's including York zoo came forward and said they would take the Giraffe. They killed the giraffe anyway because he didn't have such strong genes despite being perfectly healthy and made some kind of spectacle of it. Some kind of warped publicity stunt. Not cool

Sorry, wasn't being condescending. Just meant it was a couple of weeks old. Think it was discussed in another thread somewhere

I have no idea. Lol. But I'm sure when the story broke they said York zoo would take the giraffe. But not convinced it was York now. Lol

I'd have expected the zoo to have prevented the pregnancy in the first place. Seems odd to have a breeding program in place only to then euthanasie as a solution to a problem which was preventable and under their control. "We need to have as healthy a stock as possible so we avoid inbreeding". So why breed something that they knew was going to be an issue if they couldn't find a home for it?

They could have given old Marius the snip and given him to any one of the multiple different zoos that would have taken him in and let him grow old.
