Gettysburg/Gods and Generals Blu Ray Box Set

Received the Collector's Edition of this yesterday and watched Gettysburg and it played no problem.(Region- Free)
Put in the Extra's disc (DVD) and it wouldn't play as it was R1.
Luckily the DVD Recorder I have is Multi-Region or I would have been stuck.
What's the point in making the Blu-Rays region-free and the extras discs R1?

It's quite common for the DVDs to be region locked in mixed blu-ray DVDs sets.

The basic rule is if the DVDs were region locked in the first place (or even now) assume they are locked unless proven otherwise or do what you did, make sure you have region free for DVD kit.
