Hi Im starting this thread because I`m in the market for a new 1080p TV. And I thought A lot of other people seem to be and All the information is spread across multiple forums So this one is going to be just a resource for Opinions and info on 1080p TV`s 40inches and above.

Ill start with what I`ve got so far:
I have an XBOX 360 with HD dvd drive and hopefully sky HD soon.

    I have been looking at a few LCD screens so far;

Samsung LE40F71BX:- 1080p over HDMI and componant and the 1.1 pixel mapping problem has now been sorted. £1550 on empire direct.

Sony W and X series 40inch LCD:- 1080p but not over componant (not so good for xbox 360) not bad reviews but on the pricy side, although there have been back light bleeding issues. I did get John Lewis to price match the 40"W to £1550 but changed my mind!

Sharp LC42XD1E & Sharp LC46XD1E I have seen the 42 in store and it looked great It has 1.1 pixel mapping over HDMI but not 1080p over componant which is a shame or there would be no contest.
the 46" has a slightly better responce time and a better colour pallete ( a additional crimson lamp I belive) but I only really need 42".
Both these sets have had great reviews and the build quality is fantastic the only let down for me is the lack of 1080p over companant but I might just put up with 1080i until xbox realease a HDMI lead.

These sets are £1099 and £1499 on Empire direct respectivly which I thought was excellent. I wanted a gurantee really which Is why Im having the 46" price matched at John Lewis as we speak. They do not stock the 42" or I would have done that one. I have read a few problems about banding on the larger sets tho.

If anyone has anything to add... or dispute! alternively you may have another suggestion on a better set or forth comming sets please share your thoughts It would be great to hear from you.

I hope this thread becomes usefull to a few people including myself!

    Speak soon,
    James

View both in as many different shops as possible.

You might be interested to know that you can get a VGA to HDMI adapter box:

    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=3569

I've seen these in the UK for about £165. Not cheep but if you're considering the Sharp over the Sony then it's still a cost saving.

Id be more worried about the buzzing / banding issues with the Sharp displays to be honest.

yes that has been seriously putting me off so far. Im leaning towards the 40" samsung as it is 1080p over all inputs and is currently £1500 from robert whyte with a 5 year gurantee.
    Still not completely sure tho.

Sharp are supposed to be bringing out new model next year (Next year only being 2 days away  ) the HD1E range which is being rumoured to have solved the banding and buzzing issue. Keeping fingers crossed as this sounds like the TV for me

its only the 46" and 52" sharps that have banding problems, the 42" doesnt get it.

the HD1E hasnt even been confirmed as being released, no specs, no nothing. There is speculation of it based on a set in the US which they reckon will be announced in the frist coiuple of weeks of 07.
Estimate for the HD1E (if we ever see it) is april.. so long time to wait.

I noticed that a couple of days ago (I think! model number getting jumbled in my head now) but on the plus side have reduced the samsung I had an eye on. Prices seem to go up and down daily, always knew it happened but first time I've actually noticed it.

Ive been looking and I think the best thing to do is wait, The sharps have had nothing but problems the samsung is too small and doesnt do 1.1 pixel mapping over all inputs and the sony doesnt accept 1080p over all inputs. There are rumours of a new sharp coming out soon that accepts 1080p over all inputs which may inspire a few other manufacturers to pull there finger out. I begrudge paying out on a TV that isnt exaclty what I want especially when their this expensive.

I'd go for the 42" XD1E or the Sony personally.
I think the Samsung LCD's have pretty bad SD PQ.

Also, the 2nd gen 360's are just around the corner and they have HDMI output.
Also, don't buy the 46" version just yet! They seem to be suffering from banding issues. As do the 52" versions as well.

i'd go for the Sharp 42" XD1E fantastic PQ on both SD and HD also great value for money when you compare it to the rival Sony set.
I was going for the Sony 40" X but after seeing the Sharp and the price i was sold.

Ive heard there are issues with ghosting in the 42 inch sets. If john lewis did it I`d get it price matched and buy it tommorrow.

Ghosting is very in-frequent and only really occurs on SD freeview.
I only use a indoor TV aerial, so I wonder if I'd still get ghosting if I had a proper signal?
