I apologise in advance if this is the wrong section, please advise if so.

I rigged up a Rasberry Pi (Raspmc) as a Media Centre for a pal of mine, to keep wiring to a minimum I connect to his NAS via WiFi, which has it's limitations. The TV powers the Pi via USB.

I noted that his SKY box transmits internet over the HDMI cable (1.4 standard) which is cool and a bit new to me. The question:

Is there some way of getting at the HDMI cable and run a small RJ45 ethernet cable from it (to the Pi), whist still sending the SKY signal to the TV?

We could run a network cable from the router but it's in another room. I'm at work so I can't remember if the sky box (that is in the room in question) has more that one HDMI out or a RJ45 socket (I don't think so)

Any help appreciated.

Any help appreciated.

I'd recommend going for basic Homeplugs and running ethernet over the mains.

Trying to tap an HDMI cable for ethernet with all the handshaking on HDMI sounds well tricky and a quick Google didn't reveal any boxes that provide a breakout.

you do get baluns that convert hdmi signal to go over Ethernet cable.

You would need a hdmi splitter that is powered as the Sky wont work without it. This is mine

As a media centre I use my xbox 360 and love it.

Can you run a CAT 5/6 cable to the back of the TV and use an unmanned switch to feed his sky/ tv / games console/blu ray player all to the internet and a NAS hard drive ?

I don't think that is possible, which seems a shame. You need a HEC (HDMI Ethernet Channel) to ethernet converter which I failed to find on google.. There seems to be very little info on HEC which I guess means not many people are using it. But it looks like the two wires in the HDMI cable are not compatible with normal ethernet. They can be used to transmit audio and there seems to be some handshaking to set up the network.

‘I noted that his SKY box transmits internet over the HDMI cable (1.4 standard) which is cool and a bit new to me’ – you must have a very special SKY box ;)

As doctorPhil outlines one of the ‘optional’ features of HDMI 1.4 was HEC – so far (some 4 years down the line) no manufacturer has implemented HEC on any commercially available device (would you want to handle the Tech support calls adding Ethernet compatibility to your products would create).

Time for Plan B!
