I have an xbox (modded) running in ntsc mode. I also have an offical HD cable from microsoft (newer one)

I want to connect the xbox to my computer monitor using the HD cable. Is this possible ? My monitor only has vga input so won't take the component cables. Is there anything that will allow me to connect the component cables to a vga monitor and then give me the HD picture ?

If your monitor doesn't accept a 1280x720 or 1920x1080 signal then you can either just set 480p only in the Xbox dashboard or you will have to get a transcoder that can output a VGA resolution such as 1024x768 but these are usually upconverted from the composite/svideo 480i signal and so wouldn't look as good...http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=222&products_id=3235&

This is my monitor - Acer AL1916WS 19 What resolution would that give ?

I'm actually thinking of getting a

    - ADVENT X19TV 19" WIDESCREEN TFT WITH BUILT IN TV TUNER

I think this has a component input that would allow me to connect direct with my HD pack.

What xbox resolution would I be able to get with that ?

With the ACER you should be able to get the 1280x720 mode - just disable the 1080 setting.

Most probably via the VGA it will be 1280x720 but if it does have component in then it may downsample a 1920x1080 image to 1280x720.

would that be better ? Surely the offical HD box would give me the best possible picture on the advent.

If you get a 1280x720 picture on the ACER using the X2VGA then that's as good as it gets really - it would be a un-noticeable difference at 1920x1080 on a 19" screen. Get XBMC as your dashboard and load up Soul Calibur II and I think you'll be reasonably impressed at what a lowly Xbox can do....
