Got to be the *must see* movie of the week.

On Five at 22:00, if you can't watch it tape it. ;)

Just a shame about the ads and news update spoiling it. :(

Heaps better than the movie on before it, "Wild Wild West".

Good recommendation bob. It has been classed as the best British gangster film ever.

I wonder if they will be showing the usual cut version of it. For one character the cut version has a happier ending.
If I watch it I will tell you which one it is and let you know what the cuts are.

Please do not mention what they are till it has been on for those who have not seen it.

    Alf Roberts

I couldn't believe it was him when I first saw it

I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the film I was expecting a lot more, that was quite a few years ago maybe I would appreciate it more now

The film was not the usual edited one, Spoilers to follow. .

The Glynn Edwards scene is some times cut soon, so it looks as though Carter lets him off, rather than killing him. And the scene where Carter gives Margaret the injection is slightly cut.

For those interested in the story was wrote by Ted Lewis called Jack's Return Home and in it Carter did not get killed and appeared in an other of Ted Lewis’s stories.

the book, "Jacks return Home" was based on actual incidents that took place up her in newcastle. It was somthing to do with somes guys that ran slot machines and a murder that took place. I watched most of the filming when it was made (it was on my doorstep). I remember Michael Caine and Ian Hendry coming to my dads Jazz club one night and Ian Hendry sang a song. Great memories for me. Great Film.

Even though I love the English country side I must say I loved the urban scenes of Newcastle. Shaunthedude is some of them places they were screened still in existence?

the house where the gangster lives is still there and pretty much the same. Those streets where carter was lodging are now all being renovated. Lots of them stood empty for years. I think the bit in the film where carter jumps off the bridge and runs down the stairs to the queyside are still there as is the bingo hall. The pub at the start of the film is called the Long Bar pub. its still there I think. Its right next to Newcastle train Station. At the end, the slag heap, I think that is further south of Newcastle. I dont think its there now.

    Cheers
That was one of the bits I liked in particular, as well as the scenes where he is following Margaret at the end.

The part where he is at his brothers funeral is at the MAin Crematorium. That is exactly the same. No change at all
