George galloway suggest we ought to talk about Joint sovereignty

These the Islands you don't care about? After a quick search I make this at least the fifth thread you've started on it.

Bored tonight? It's Friday, go out?

The day George Galloway has anything worth saying is the day the Devil goes to work in a snowplough.

Galloway is one of those treacherous uber-leftie gobshites that wants to run down this country at every opportunity. Thankfully he will never be taken seriously.

NO, which shouldn't be lost in translation as it's the same word in Spanish.

Yes the UK Government of the time were in the early beginnings of handing the Falklands back to General Leopoldo Galtieri and his junta, however by some poor Military gamble (Galteri went to prison for Military incompetence) to legitimize their coup d'état and decided to invade and thus certainly for living memory the Falklands will stay as they are and so they should too. Not only was Galirteri responsible for the deaths of 3 Falkland Islanders 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen by his Military incompetence, he was also responsible for deaths for many political opponents, however died before trial in 2003.

So now on to Cristina Kirchner the "old hag" as quoted by Uruguay's President Jose Mujica recently, by coincidence Uruguay also lay claim to the Falklands due to 172-year-old treaty signed between Spain and Uruguay and as recent as 1972 international agreement on the Antartic confirmed Uruguay as the rightful owner of the Falklands.

Whatever your thoughts on the Islands and its far removed from sovereignty concerns on all sides! However the people of the Falklands spoke unanimously on March 10 and 11 and Gorgeous George would do well in listening to them rather than his nose for black stuff.

As a reminder, for those new to the forum, LGS is entirely "neutral" on the Falklands issue....
:hiya:

LGS a few things. We have gone to war over them now. It means we can't give them up. Ever. It would be political suicide. They had a referendum and decided they wanted to stay as a UK dependent.

So we have fought for them, they want to be linked to us.

What was your point again?

the point is we may be forced to and will have to do so humiliatingly, bit like Suez except worse because there would be nationals to repatriate. If the Americans decide we need to leave because its in their own interest that we do, then we will regardless.Argentina will then claim a huge victory which they will constantly remind us and the world of.We just are not the power we once were and the sooner we get that into our minds, the better

LGS - what is your opinion on the right to self determination?

the point is we may be forced to and will have to do so humiliatingly,
The point is it tends to be the Argentines who were humiliated in 82 and still are being by De Kirchner still banging on about it.

bit like Suez except worse because there would be nationals to repatriate.
Repatriate to were? It's their Islands and has been for generations. Oh you mean "ethnic cleansing". Sorry.
If the Americans decide we need to leave because its in their own interest that we do,
Americans? What do they have to do with it??? Their position is of long standing neutrality. In ‘82 they came down on our side anyway. Besides that, Britain is still a major world power whereas, Argentina is just around to make Cyprus look rich.
then we will
Err, America wanted us involved in Vietnam. We didn't. You do realise we are an independent sovereign nation? Sorry but this is bizarre.
regardless.Argentina will then claim a huge victory which they will constantly remind us and the world of.We just are not the power we once were and the sooner we get that into our minds, the better
Even more barking. Funnily enough we don't all remember Victorian England. Who do you think remembers the Empire? Was around then? Most people struggle to remember the Falklands War other than a moment in history let alone Victorian England.

Still this is another of your common themes.
Suez alone:

I could write out your stock phrases throw them in the air and stick them on here for your next thread on it. Or we could play a game similar to ******** Bingo with them.

“Hand over in a hundred years”, “Suez”, “humiliation”, “Empire former glory” “Hong Kong”.

Blah, blah blah. Your chums lost. Move on.

Also this is what De Kirchners rabble rousing did:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...-officially-pledging-to-defend-Falklands.html

Mr Hague explained that the paper highlighted the importance the government attaches to its overseas territories.

"We appreciate the remarkable diversity of the Territories, each with their own specific attributes, opportunities and challenges," he said.

"This White Paper is designed to meet these challenges, to set out ways we can support the Territories and strengthen our engagement with them.

"It is another major milestone in our long and shared history, and I hope it will mark a new era of engagement between Britain and the Overseas Territories," he added.

It's like the blitz. The bombing of London was supposed to make us quit. It didn't. The more Argentina bangs on about the Islands the more it keeps them in the news and hardens the resolve over them.

Next they will be officially a part of the UK with MPs in the House Of Commons. So crack on with it.

Another chance to get myself in hot water :)

The Falklanders want to remain in the UK. Yet they are not in the UK or Argentina. Let them stand independently and withdraw the military support. They can provide their own and fend for themselves. Soon get fed up of inhabiting a bit of miserable rock in a freezing ocean with no support from the UK. No more subsidies, we can't afford it.

No reason for the UK to think they can hand it over like we own it. The Falklanders can make their own minds up and the Argentinians can stop worrying about the UK being some sort of invading force. If they do attempt to invade, it would be on a sovereign, independent state and other countries can decide if they want to help defend it.

What's more, if there is oil and other wealth and the UK and Argentina want to set up a base, they can bid for it and help the Falklands economy.

Well maybe it could be considered once the USA gives the Canal Zone back to Panama.

They wish to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.

At least do the research.

Argentina or more specifically De Kirchner walked out on that in 2007.

They did. It ceased to be under sole US control in 1979 and since 1999 is effectively under the sole control of Panama.

Yeah yeah - how about rule of law in Argentina? Deal with that first.

You logic regarding self sufficiency is not at fault but we should continue to defend them from potential external threats. As pointed out, they are an Overseas Territory.

They are self sufficient. They got along fine prior to 82. Since then there is a larger garrison there but then the garrison at Cyprus is twice the size of that.

I didn't say that they were not self sufficient. My remarks were aimed at the quote which included the comment "What's more, if there is oil and other wealth and the UK and Argentina want to set up a base, they can bid for it and help the Falklands economy."

I happen to agree with that.

Maybe I should have said "Your logic regarding improved self sufficiency ........" On the other hand, you have to question if their current so called 'self sufficiency' pays the full cost of their defence (and other) needs.

So have many other countries, but we let them stand alone never the less. Its a tiny island with much of the population reliant on UK tax funding in one way or another. They are living a lifestyle with UK subsidies.

It is not Argentina's or the UK's. that should be made abundantly clear to all parties. It would stop all the politics. Saying that it is part of the UK is just stirring things up. If they were a totally independent nation they could trade peacefully, accept new immigrants from Argentina and elsewhere and grow their economy.

We do no favours to them by keeping them going and continuing the fight.

Its actually a pointless discussion. If we aren't going to let them free, then the politicking will go on for many years with no resolution. It will cost the UK tax payer and annoy the Argentinians. The country lives off tinned food and tough mutton, it is not viable economically and the only way it could ever be, is to trade with its neighbours on an equal footing. They can have their own laws and regulations being neither Argentinian or British.

Lets face it, the Uk Government is interested in one thing only - oil and mineral rights. The rest is purely 'politics'.

Then let us pay the Falklanders for the rights to drill in their area and allow the Argentinians and whoever else wants to bid to make counter offers or commence joint working. The whole thing is incredibly small minded. We are tying ourselves in knots over nothing.
