There have been so many genre defining games released this year IMO, so I thought i'd start a thread to see which games people felt best define the various gaming genres.

Games can come from any point in time, so if you feel that a Spectrum game is still the game that best defines a certain genre then go for it. A genre defining game is basically one which is the best example of it's genre. It should be the benchmark game which all future games will look to surpass.

Anyway, i'll record the results below from time to time and i've set up some common genre's. Some overlap each other and i'm sure that not all are included below, so if people want more genre's including then just say so and i'll add them. :) I've added my choices so far. You don't have to pick a choice for each catagory (you could just pick one if you liked) so feel free to post as many or as few choices as you like.

Oh and remember it's just for fun so try to keep any platform bias away from any discussion and just try to think of the games. :smashin:

First Person Shooter - Call of Duty 4
First and foremost I will say I really enjoyed Call Of Duty 4 and certainly think it is one of the years better games. But I'll be honest - I can't think of anyway it could be possibly described as 'genre defining'. It has exceptional graphics - but is bettered by others (e.g. Crysis). It also has a narrative - but it's not strong and compelling. The action is fun and the firefights enjoyable - but it doesn't add anything new - it just refines the FPS genre.

So what would be a FPS genre defining game then? Well for the FPS I would argue Quake - which introduced us to 3D graphics, polygons and unrestricted free look. Then maybe Half Life which introduced us to a scripted scene based storyline. Other than those, and maybe a few others, a would say the whole FPS genre has been one of gradual development and refinement with very few games as standout 'genre defining' titles.

All IMHO of course.

It's all opinions and just a bit of fun. COD4 is the FPS game that best defines the genre at this time IMO. I'm not saying that it's the most original or the most "important" (historically speaking) as it is not. It is the bench mark that IMO best defines the genre for me at the moment. It has a great single player, a fantastic multiplayer and if someone asked me - "show me a game that best displays the genre of an FPS shooter" - then COD4 would be my choice.

I guess your post has raised an important point however in that this thread isn't "what are the most important video games ever" (infact I did a thread on that subject a while ago) but more that which games currently best define their genres. It's interesting to see if some genre's are still best defined by older titles or if most have been improved by more recent releases. :)

:rotfl: Not at all.

Okay - my list then (smaller than most as I only play a handful of genres):

I'm sure Portal will be revered in a few years time with a dynamic that may be incorporated into FPS's going forward. Could it be inevitable that this feature ends up in HL3...

Suspect you're probably right Tejstar - I should imagine a few games will take inspiration from Portal. Given Valve's speed of development though I should imagine it will be very old hat by the time it appears in the Half Life saga!

I have listed the genre's that I normally play

Misc Genre

- Mystical Ninja (SNES) - Not sure where to put this one, it has all sorts in it.

There are quite a few games I disagree with in the list already :)

PSO - To me this wasn't genre defining at all, and was mediocre at best. EQ on the PC or Ultima Online were far more accomplished. There still hasn't been a decent arcade MMORPG online yet, which is what I would class PSO as.

COD4 - This is a decent shooter, but it is not genre defining. It's online is still far inferior to CS, I don't think it will ever reach the heights of that game, nor last as long.

C&C games - The first was a decent game, however the rest were very derivative. They all pale in comparison to Total Annhilation, Starcraft, Company of Heroes or the indepth RTS's of the Total War series. Also, Homeworld, Warhammer 40K are technically better games.

Blazing Angels - Wow that is a surprise to me! Not even a hint of Pilotwings or Ace Combat or Afterburner? Even the flying race sections in Diddy Kong Racing are most probably more genre defining :p

Gotta say though there are some choice games in so far also. Laser Squad, Sensi Soccer, FF Tactics, Elite all uber games and blasts from the past!

Righty, I'll give this a go, I'm no expert though...

Some great games in there . It's interesting that the current top 3 (Wii Sports, Super Mario World & Tetris were all games packaged with (or at least launched with) 3 Nintendo machines (Wii, SNES & Gameboy).

3D Platform

- Tomb Raider (Multi)

Prince of Persia in 3D, I spent ages running and jumping just to see what platforms you could hang, crawl and catch.

2D Platform

- Exile (BBC Micro)

A truly groundbreaking game on an 8 bit platform. Recognised as the first game to introduce physics. The game also had programming that featured innovative routines like creature strategy code that knew about noises nearby, line-of-sight vision through the diverse caves, and enemy's memory of where the target was last seen. All this from a game designed to run on 32KB, I even bought a 16KB ROM upgrade for the BBC.

Sim Racing

- Stunt Car Racer (Amiga)

RPG

- Baldurs Gate (PC)

MMORPG

- Star Wars Galaxies (PC)

Despite it’s many flaws, what could be better than a Star Wars MMORPG. I lost nearly a, but I will concede that it’s Everquest in space.

First Person Shooter Online

- TF2 (PC)

The original one, not the one in the Orange box (which is still great BTW). The first team based online strategy game, a breath of fresh air after all the deathmatch games.

First Person Shooter Offline

- Wolfenstine (PC)

I was going to go with Doom here, until I remembered that it was Wolfenstine that defined the FPS genre. From that point everything is just a evolution.

Light Gun Game

- Operation Wolf (Arcade) - 2

I remember having to queue for this machine.

Real Time Strategy

- Command & Conquer (PC)
If we are talking about “Genre Defining” then it has to be the original.

Turn Based Strategy

- Laser Squad (Amiga)

Shoot 'em Up (Vertical)

- Xenon 2 (Amiga)

Flight Simulation

- Wings (Amiga)

I loved the way your head turned to look in the direction of the target.

Space Combat/Exploration/Trading

- Elite (BBC)

I’m surprise to see Bioshock in the list, what makes it such a Genre defining title. 5 Years down the line will it still be held with such high regard ?

Just as a side note, genre defining doesn't have to be the game that say first created the genre (i.e. as posted above, this thread isn't about the most important games ever or games which created genre's).

A genre defining game is the game which you feel best defines a genre at this point in time, i.e. which games are really at the pinnacle of their genre's. Personally I don't think that Elite has ever been beaten when it comes to space trading/exploration etc. so to me that still best defines that genre. I also do not feel that Operation Wolf has ever been beaten when it comes to light gun games. Wolfenstein on the other hand, whilst a very important game has been improved on in many areas (not just graphically, which isn't the most important factor IMO) and neither that nor Doom would be the game I would select that best defines the FPS genre now.

CAS is correct.

Warioware on GBA, Ico, God of War and WE6:FE on PS2, Portal on 360, Phoenix Wright and MArio Kart on DS. As dull as i find it, i think Halo was genre defining in terms of console FPS on xbox. I think COD4 has done the same for next gen FPS, set the bar fairly high.

Wii Sports? Really? If we're classing it as sports i don't think it holds up against it's competitors and it's definitely not genre defining in the mini-game realm. I cans ee why people pick it though.....is bowling a game genre?

Wii Sports is in the casual games genre and to be honest in that genre nothing else really comes close IMO. Maybe Guitar Hero etc. but i've never seen a game sell a console as well as Wii Sports as loads of people went out and bought one after playing on it round ours. Tennis, Bowling & Boxing are all favourites and all work really well.

I guess the thing with Casual games is that you have to view them from a none gamers viewpoint.

Zelda Links Awakening, Oracles of Ages/Seasons: GBA/GBC

Shenmue 1 + 2

Deus Ex 1 - PC

Galleon - xbox

Just a little correction for the list, when I mentioned Parsec in the horizontal shooter, that game was for the Texas Instruments TI99/4A, not the C64(not sure if it was released on this platform later though?).

Sorry, should have specified that in the first place, was a fantastic game in its day!

Didn't realise we were allowed more than one vote per category, maybe just as well as I could probably go on all day;)

Good point about the 'casual games' being a genre actually. You could throw the eyetoy, singstar and some other PS2 stuff from it's later days in too. People forget that the PS2 has been catering to the non-gamer for a while too, just not to the Wiis extent.

Guitar Hero has to be in rhythm action, and it is probably the defining game of that genre, as much fun as your Elite Beat Agents, Gitaroo Man, Rez etc are.

Championship Manager 01/02 on PC.

Oh indeed, but to be honest whilst the likes of EyeToy were initially fun, they don't compare to the likes of Wii Sports for me and that is easily the best casual game out there IMO. Literally everyone I know who has played it (regardless of age) has loved it and I can't say that for any other game - ever!

The PS2 has been a good console for casual gamers (hence the great sales late on in it's life) with games like Buzz, Singstar, Eye Toy, Guitar Hero, dance mat games like DDR etc. but the Wii has taken things to a new level both with the DS & the Wii. Their marketing is amazing and even my folks have just bought a DS each this year! They would never buy a PSP or a PS2 (or any other console apart from maybe the Wii) and that speaks volumes for me.

Yeah, just thinking out loud really. For all the PS2s broad appeal, the memorable games are still the God of War, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, etc whereas the Wii is all about the control scheme lending itself to the 'casual' game.

The DS is the defining 'console' of this generation anyway. We can do the PS3/360/Wii thing all day long, but the DS is streets ahead in sales because it's the first time anything has appealed to everyone. Not every gamer, every person out there.

Dementium: The Ward pretty much completing it as the perfect machine for me. :D

Indeed, you really have to take your hat off to Nintendo as they have been exceptionally clever. Firstly they have got the products right so that anyone can play them, secondly they have a range of games on them that appeal to a very wide audience and thirdly, their marketing is so spot on it's unreal! If anyone wants to ever analyse an amazing marketing campaign then they need look no further than Nintendo. Using celebrities that everyone relates to mixed in with some "real life" people allows people to instantly connect with their products. Their adverts show how easy their products are to use and how much fun they are (they sell the experience of using the DS & Wii in their). Finally they have that plinky plonk noise at the start of all their adverts which not only attracts viewers, but it also (along with the style of their adverts) links the DS & the Wii together under the same brand so that DS gamers are much more likely to try the Wii and vica versa.

I never thought you would be able to sell video games to my folks or my mother in law, but they are all DS owners. Friends who I never thought would have bought consoles own DS's & Wii's. It's amazing what they have done and when you look back at where they were with the Gamboy Advance and the Gamecube and where they are now with the DS & Wii then it's remarkable! Almost from zero to hero in one generation!
