GT200 is Geforce GTX 280

"Nvidia has dared to make a drastic move in its naming convention. According to several sources close to the company, the new flagship chip codenamed GT200 and D10U-30 and D10U-20 will end up with Geforce GTX 280 brand for the faster card.

There will be one more branded as Geforce GTX 260 and this would be the one that many believed will be branded as Geforce 9900GT.

The launch is scheduled for the 25th week of the year and it should take place between the 16th and 20th of June. Roy Tailor the Vice President of "The Way It's Meant to Be Played" said that Nvidia’s names got a bit too complicated.

We remember that John Byrne, Vice president of Graphics, said the same as ATI lost its XT and PRO suffixes in its names. We believe that Nvidia learned from ATI that this actually did help and therefore they are doing the same; the bigger number means better, at least in their three digit brands, but we are still stuck with the suffixes for the time beeing. "

Geforce GTX 280 to launch on June 18th

"We've found out what looks to be the launch date for GT200 cards. We are happy to report that both GT200 cards are single chip cards, something that we've suggested back in January.

The launch should take place on the 18th of June, just in the middle of week 25, and at current schedule that is two days after ATI's RV770 launch.

The name Geforce GTX 280 looks a bit odd, but I am sure that we will get used to it. The only other alternative was to use Geforce 9900 cliché but we believe that GT200 deserves better name. As its been suggested at many occasions GT200 chip will have significantly more Shader units and the most frequent number that we heard was 240. We still work on getting the confirmation of this bold spec.

Nvidia just ran out of numbers and it’s starting all over again. It's like reseting the odometer, more or less. "

The thing that springs to mind with this new numbering system is the Geforce 4, specifically the Geforce 4 MX 420, 440 and 460. Lets hope the GT200 doesn't follow in those footsteps!

Finally some great news about a new card. I have been waiting for a while for this new card to come about. I wonder if BFG will soup it up with an OC and OC2 model about a month or two later.

:clap::clap::clap:

Of course they will. They always do. :smashin:

I too am looking forward to a new toy.

Sound interesting and looks like I might go for this in a new PC (although I'm not allowed to buy anything till we move to a new house  )

NVIDIA Editors Day 2008

"Just wait until June 17th when the newest series of GeForce GPU's launch, and you'll start asking yourself when you last witnessed such a dramatic technology improvement. If you thought the GeForce 8 series blew the 7-series out of the water, this is going to leave you in shock. That's not my own marketing spin... Benchmark Reviews is presently testing the new GeForce video card."

Not looking forward to the power requirements though...

Not looking forward to the power requirements though...

Its the same as current top end cards.

Unless I have missed something.

from the table and specs gtx280 uses 236 watts which is fair bit more than the rest

The graph on this article is interesting. 3x as much power on Folding@Home compared to a HD 3870!

also those figures are likely to be at idle. can only imagine what sort of psu u would need for sli gtx 280

LOL you said Sli... i am always sceptical about sli, usually they don't scale very well.

Apart from that, this is great news that they are bring this card forward.

 HAPPYDAYS!

OMG! I just saw the pics! There are TWO power ports :S

Two power ports is pretty much standard these days on top end cards. The 8800GTX/ULTRA/GX2 has two power ports. :)

Interesting article, does not fill me with confidence at all regarding the GTX 260. I do wonder whether the ATi HD 4870 will have the upper hand this time around (maybe not in absolute brute power but at least in value for money).

I believe if you get the best card at the time you get value for money as it will last longer with higher settings. :)
