I'm looking at getting this card within the next month - but i've been out of the hardware loop for a while now and am wondering if there are any 'better' cards on the horizon any time in the next year? If so, I might save the cash and wait.

ATI is launching its first Direct X 10 cards in the next month or so, which might be worth waiting for. The HD 2900 XT card has been benchmarked and beat Nvidia's 640mb 8800GTS (the model below the 768mb GTX you are considering) in nearly every trial. I think they have a card above that one as well, with 1gb of GDDR4 ram which will probably be better than the 8800 GTX, however i'm sure nVidia will have a response to that! If anything, its worth waiting for these cards to come out as the price of DX10 cards should start to fall, as the prices are ridiculous at the moment!

agree with above - a couple more weeks should see some serious competition with the launch of the ATI cards.

Also unless u are gaming at very high res etc - the 8800GTX 768mb card is a massive overkill and a bonkers price!!!

the gts 640 or even the 320mb one would be sufficent for most gaming needs and also a bit lighter in the pocket!

Depends which source you read. the 2900XT & XTX were destroyed by the 8800GTX here
