How does the utility company know what unit your gas readings use?

My Dad had been giving imperial readings but charged for metric, and it got me wondering.

I tried ringing the utility but after 20 minutes at peak time I gave up.

They calculate it to convert to metric and not always accurately, they recently charged me for nearly £17,000 worth of gas due to a miscalculation. It should have been £32. All sorted now but their 'computer' kept sending threatening letters over this 'debt' for ages afterwards and it increased my direct debit to £1735 pm.
You can check the calculations with an online calculator, I use this one Gas kWh Conversion Tool | Utilities Savings
