Garmin Nuvi 3790T - Mapsource

Hi

I have recently brought myself a Garmin 3790T Sat-Nav and have also purchsed the North America Maps on DVD.

The problem i am having is that i am able to program a route in mapsource but they will not transfer/show on the 3790. Way points are not a problem. Also routes created in the trip planner on the 3790 will not upload to mapsource.

I assume that the routes should show up on the 3790 in the trip planner menu.

Does any know what the problem might be and any possible solution?

Also how do you remove added maps from the 3790 and would a full reset do this. If so how is this done.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I have spoken to Garmin today who have confirmed that there is a bug with the Mapsource software regarding the transferring of routes between mapsource and the 3790T and vice versa. As yet there are no dates available for this bug fix to be released. Just thought it might be of interest to anyone thinking of getting a Nuvi 3790T / additional maps in the near future. Don't get me wrong both products inividually seem excellent, i just wish they would work together.
I guess this is the price you pay for being quick to invest in new technology!

Hi

I have logged a report electronically with Garmin whi have acknowledged the problem. This was their reply:

"The nuvi 3700 series was developed without the ability to transfer
routes from MapSource to the device. The import feature found on
previous devices is not in the nuvi 3700 series.

I have passed your email onto our engineering team for consideration for
future software updates."

I think it is quite a poor show that their products are not fully compatible.

That said i have found the new 3790T to be excellent. If your interested in getting one i still would. I have set up waypoints using mapsource then imported them to the unit. Setting up routes is then done on the unit itself. Its no big deal but still no the point.

Hope this was useful!

Oh dear, that is really disappointing!
I love the look of this unit....but it's expensive...perhaps I should save £100+ and just get another Garmin unit....oh decisions decisions.

Regarding the inability to upload routes to the Garmin 37xx series - I found this post on the gpspassion.com forums:

"Here is a post from the ceo at Garmin in Denmark that confirms this. The post is a response to a question from one of the mod's at garmin-user.dk (Translated with Google Translate):

"Let me start by finding a couple things for comprehension's sake:
Is nüvi 37xx series the latest series we have launched? Yes.
Do this (per automatics) make it as the new top model? No.
Our current top model pt. 1690, launched last autumn. 37xx series is a mid-range (this is called the manifest) series, ie. it is not our less expensive but also not the most expensive, and thus before it provides functions - not all, conversely it is not completely stripped.

It is true that there can not be transferred routes to 37xx series at this time, since this feature is not supported. It was debated during the development of the model there was a need for this and it was opted out - but it was impressed by was that the users desire this feature would be added via a future firmware update.

So if you can get members of GU - have a 37xx series, and want this feature - to make a list of users on my.garmin, so we are facing our development department can demonstrate that users have purchased the device, we can put pressure on them to get this feature added.

Link (danish): http://garmin-user.dk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3415&get=last#21265""

Therefore I'd urge anybody who is interested in this functionality (or even those who aren't but want to support this!) to make a request as mentioned above.

The inability to upload POI's and routes to the 3790T is not the only problem. I have two units. One is completely useless. It needs more than 30 minutes to locate satellites and, when found, looses them frequently even on open road. Useless error messages are also frequent. Contacting GARMIN Technical support in the UK is an exercise in futility. They never answer.
Another problem is their server. I tried to download the new map updates. Takes forever and usually after about 6 hours you get a server error message. I have been trying about 5 times for each unit, to no avail. I tried Microsoft and Apple computers, no difference. This is absolutely ****** service.

Can you navigate to any position on the map? Can you simply click anywhere on the map and make the GPS navigate to that specific spot?
I really hope someone can answer this, because it determines whether i will buy this GPS or not.

Yes you can, you browse the map, touch your chosen location and hit 'Go!'

I've had a nuvi 3790t for around six months - it kept crashing and eventually it developed a bug where the date was stuck in 2030 - this is a pain with the automatic night colours as the dusk time feature is date reliant.

I would recommend the online complaints and returns procedure - it takes a few days for a customer service representative to return your e-mails but they do issue returns numbers and when I sent mine off they replaced it with a completely new one in under a week.
