Gaming PC Spec

Still looking into this.

Son is adamant he wants a higher FPS from fortnite. Going to buy a new 1080 monitor for his PC and keep the existing one for the XSX

What CPU and GPU do we need minimum to run fortnite at over 144fps?

(to caveat i don't agree with his logic, but its his money etc)

I posted this in the hardware bargain thread.
The components to buy yourself work out at about £70 less (and that's if you can get the 6700XT at a reasonable price).
The extra cost is worth it over the build you first mentioned due to the far superior GPU
(Which should play not things at 1440p on Ultra)

Thanks will take a look.

Everything we've looked at today has been Ryzen and Nvidia

Most modern PCs with a half decent GPUwill give you decent frame rates with Fortnite. What fps is he looking for?

The latest Ryzen CPUs are better overall for both gaming and productivity But the Intel i5 CPUs right now are better value for money and more than hold their own in gaming.

He was talking about 170+ yesterday
It sounds like he's more worried about being competitive than it looking nice. The build referenced here will hit that mark no problem. But then on low settings so would a previous gen GPU.

I reckon you'll need a 5600X and no more than a 3060TI/3070/6700XT and even then I think that's over kill. But if he's now obsessed high FPS that would do the trick. Either that or see if you can get a 6700 when it turns up. Don't think the 3060 is quite good enough. A 2070S or 2080 would be ok as well I think for 1080p high refresh rate.

Perf wise 3060, 2070S, 2080, 2080S/3060TI/6700XT, 3070/2080TI.

But the 6700XT fluctuates between a 3060TI and a 3070 or better depending on the game.

He can get away with less and the 5600x is maybe a little overkill. An Intel i5 should be ok but apparently every new season requires a bit more grunt so the 5600x will give you some headroom. The PC recommended on this thread with a 6700xt should get you over 200fps.

A little confused as to why he wants both the PC and an XSX.. Given most if not all Xbox games are on PC, wouldn't it be better to maybe sell the Xbox and put the money towards a beefier PC?

He has mentioned this. Which makes me shudder after the effort I went to to get it for Xmas! (Plus the PS5 for my youngest)

Im currently playing on an Xbox one X, so I’d probably sell that and give him the difference and keep the XSX for myself.

I think he’ll be close to £1,200 though without selling the XSX, which should be enough for the PC.
He’d then have to sell the 4K monitor to get a 1080 or 1440 one.

Hi. I'm in the same boat as you. Son currently plays on my xbox one x but wants to get into PC gaming, mostly so he can mod certain games and get used to mouse and keyboard. I'm sure he will also stream st some point down the line.
Having always had consoles what spec to get is a minefield with so many options I'm lost! Plus how easy is it to get those essential parts now. My budget also similar to you, just not sure what monitor to get or what size.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome.

The thoughts and suggestions are already here in this thread. Its not a long thread so just read it first then maybe ask additional questions. After that it depends on how much you want to spend.

It sounds like you've bought enough to be fair. This isn't even about the money. It's the effort like you said and the fact that he only recently got a new machine. It "sounds" like the start, or from what you say, the continuation of a regular stream of future upgrade requests.

Any thoughts on the above. Just within budget as I will also need monitor, mouse/keyboard which this comes with.

For me, a hard no!
Poor CPU.
Slow RAM.
Not enough RAM for a modern PC.
Ok GPU but better options available for the same money.
Better storage options available for the same money.

.... and I bet the other components aren't great as well

Easy for me to say but If it was around £500 for the PC alone then maybe but otherwise I would rather get a better PC and connect it to my TV than get this for this money.

Chill blast are expensive.
This PC, for example, has a much better CPU, a far superior GPU and is £100 cheaper (albeit without a monitor etc, which will cost just over £100 depending on the spec)

So far both the palicomp you kindly posted at the top of this page and the one from PC specialist above look within my budget. Have you had any experience from either or favour one set up over the other?
Currently the only other cost factor I need is keyboard and mouse but looks like £30 should be enough for this, and a monitor, 27" should be big enough, and about £150 should get me something decent. Its water cooling essential at this point?

Water cooling is definitely not "essential" at this point lol. As long as your case has airflow then there is no reason to add the extra expense and complication. If however, you see that your CPU temps are regularly around 80 degrees then it would be time to think about either upgrading the existing air cooler or go for water cooling. I upgraded my air cooler and my temps went down 20 degrees.

My thread got hijacked :)

So I’m now on the look for a 5600x with a 3060TI/3070/6700XT. What is the order of preference on those GPU

That set-up should keep him good for a few years? And allow to sreeam

Apologies for the hijack, seems we are both in the same position. My son is 9 and now wants to go from xbox to PC and it doesn't seem as simple as console buying and playing.

Hope the replies from my hijacking have been helpful 🙂

Happy to follow from a distance.

Whichever you get will be great but:

3070 is better than both the 3060ti and 6700xt >= 3060ti. So 3070 then either 3060ti or 6700xt depending on your needs and more importantly what's available.
