    Xbox 360 or Xbox One

Can both be played wired or via a USB wireless dongle. Please note the Xbox one wireless dongle is inbound so not in the shops yet.

There are other options but those would be the popular choice.

You can use a DS4 as well but the Xbox controllers are plug and play and games are usually mapped to use them.... theyre also very nice.

The Dual Shock 4 has the added niceness of a touch pad which can drive your mouse cursor. There is software out there to make it emulate an Xbox pad and it connects wirelessly via bluetooth with a custom driver. Not exactly plug and play though.

I'm surprised the Logitech F710 doesn't seem to get much love. Replicates an Xbox pad wirelessly (and comes with the dongle you need) but, unlike the Xbox gamepad, also allows you to map keyboard commands to buttons for games that do not well support gamepads.

Logitech F710 Wireless Gamepad: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Also, steam controller pre-orders are open now for delivery in October.

your problems are because of motionjoy, it's the worst software for a DS3/DS4 pad.
You should be using the SCP driver package.

Logitech Chillstream, has a fan and vents to supply cooling air to the hands during intense sessions. It's crap.

Has anyone got a side by side comparison of a playstation controller with the Logitech F310/710?

The xbox 360 controller causes tenosynovitis in my left thumb, whereas the ps2/ps3 controller are just the right size for my hands. I was hoping the Logitech is a similar size or I'll just get a ps2 to usb converter.
