Gamecube?

    Are ther any plans for the gamecube to be able to play online?

    Yes, it is capable (Phantasy Star Online). I think the current plan is that Nintendo are going to use a third party currently Gamespy, maybe SEGA to provide the lobby software.

    It will act very much like the X-Box software for Gamespy (before X-Box live started) and should be available for any network compatible games.

    However, don't expect a full Nintendo service anytime soon.

    Nintendo mentioned in a press release that they were not intending to anything whatsoever themselves online in the foreseeable future, but that third parties were considering it.
